Man i am quite saddend to hear this, although i am into soul and breakbeat music,i really liked some of their early tunes, atleast they are all still friends, most groups who part, usually end up squabling over silly things.

Good times. Thanks so much for the music and memories. Hope to see more Peter Buck around town doing more projects.
      Truly great artists.

      Cheers!

Man, I can't believe bought my copy of "Fables of the reconstuction" 25 years ago. It was a gamble as I hadn't heard the band just read somewhere that they were good, I took a lot more chances after that.

Never my favourite band in the world but a lot of their music takes to me distinct happy places in my life, that's pretty huge.

I saw them when they were the opening act for Simple Minds back in 85 or 86? Wasn't excited. I always respected them more than I loved them, but I have my share of favorite REM songs. My favorite album of theirs is one of B sides and outtakes called Dead Letter Office. I haven't spent money on them in a long time, but in truth I can say that about most music these days.

In the late `80's-early `90's they virtually ruled the airwaves. I always had hoped they'd make a comeback with material as good as that but it just never happened. They haven't been the same since Bill Berry left the band. I understand tho and hope they get together occasionally in the not too distant future.

The only album I ever owned of theirs was Green. It took me a bit to give them a shot, as I was skeptical about "college music" as Rolling Stone called alternative back then. I wish I had been more open-minded, since I missed them, Husker Du, and The Replacements during their heydays.

Wow, first Phil Collins and now R.E.M.. Music has changed so much that im not suprised. This band really took over the radio in the late eighties, i dont think they ever really reached U2's level though, but thats my opinion. It just makes me think of the good times i had back in my youth when they were ruling the air waves!

I can barely remember that episode of 21 Jump Street that I first heard REM, but I ran out and bought GREEN the next day, followed by Eponymous.

One of the best days of my life was when I first moved to Toronto and heard that they were giving a surprise free concert on Yonge street in front of the Eaton Centre... Running down there to get in the thick of the crowd that had converged there for the concert/street party.

Not a huge fan, but I too respected them, and really liked a few of their songs. Losing My Religion was the most over-played song of that year though. I was pretty sick of it, and still kind of am. Everybody Hurts can really get to you if you hear it at just the right time. Stand is just a fun song. And anyone who has the cajones to record and release Shiny Happy People is okay in my book. Enjoy retirement.
