    Cool Hurricane Picture

Here in NYC, officials have shut down the mass transit system- subways, buses, trains and all- in anticipation of the high winds of Hurricane Irene. This is really unprecidented move as this city is almost completely reliant on mass transit (about 5 MILLION a day ride the system).

Here is something you will most likely never see- an empty Grand Central Station-

It's actually almost creepy. Kinda reminds me of that series that was on, I think, TLC called "Life After People" that documented what would theoretically happen to all the "stuff" we leave behind....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Remember when Mayor Bloomberg was accused of under-reacting to the hurricane this past winter? This is his over-reaction. But I completely understand why they shut down the WHOLE mass transit system and stations: People panic and just don’t understand when some lines run and some don’t. Causes more confusion and chaos. Also—and few seem to have mentioned this—but this storm is hitting on the weekend and the weekend PRIOR to Labor Day. Meaning it’s really no big whoop to do this on a weekend as opposed to a weekday or a peak summer weekend. If the storm were to hit on the weekday I would have expected slowed down MTA service but no complete shutdown.

Lots of rain and flooding in areas where flooding happens. Some tree damage like those crazy thunderstorms that we occasionally get but not much else. But personally, the panicy/edgey/hoardy atmosphere in NYC is really stifling. That’s personally making me feel worse than this weather is.

This is because it takes 8 hours to shut the lines down. The city has to guess at when winds will reach consistent speeds of 40mph, not what the conditions are at the moment.

They definitely played it on the conservative side, but they were guessing that rains and wind would get more serious abound 8 or 9pm. They actually could have waited until about 3pm.

Neat picture. I take it they renamed Grand Central? We drove through Manhattan on vacation and I had no idea that the Tri Borough had been renamed for RFK.
                        It's all good!

Nah, its just people just assume that the train station is called a station. There are several station called "terminal" because that where the line ends. In Philly there's the Reading Terminal (now a market).

There Grand Central Terminal replaced Grand Central Station. The latter was used for steam engines but ultimately had to be replaced by a facility that could handle the new sparkly electric trains. And ebfore the Station, there was also a Grand Central Depot.
