    Buried Treasures

Anyone see the new series by the twin brothers who usually perform appraisals on antique furniture?

It was really interesting but really enjoyed that they are covering a broad range of collectibles. They had a collector and his wife with a nice comic collection. He had Hulk #1 and Amazing Fantasy #15. They hooked him up with some of the most well known authorities in the business. The Hulk #1 had a few condition issues, most noticeably was someone had re-inked part of the cover which bled through to the other side. They valued it at around $2,400. Amazing Fantasy #15 also had some condition isssues, one being a piece of tape that inked brown and placed over tear on the cover. That one was valued at $4,500. They were willing to buy these by the way or help auction them. He agreed to let both go. His killer item was a 1941 Superman Serial Cel which was extremely rare. He mentioned that he paid a few thousand for it (I don't know what a few thousand means) but they valued the item at $55-$60K are were willing to give him $58K for it on the spot. He was really attached to it and not ready to sell at that point in time. Just thought it was cool that they aren't just focusing on furniture or boring antiques.

Saw it and was annoyed by the whole Comic Collector sequence...

Those guys from Heritage are thieves and the guy himself was an idiot.

The Fliesher Cell was amazing and easily worth 2 to possibly 3 times more then what they were willing to pay and he was wise to hold on to it.

As far as the 2 books were concerned...Any respectable collector would have seen and/or known that the Hulk was tampered with and the Amazing Fantasy had a freakin' chunk removed from the cover that was attached with tape...and this guy acted SURPRISED to see all that...really?...surprised?

Outside of that...I really did enjoy the show and actually respect the Twin Brothers...but I walked away from the show smelling like it was a plug for them and their friends (like Heritage) services...like free advertising but they're getting paid for it.

I agree that the whole comics appraisal segment seemed phonied-up, which is typical with these shows, as we've discussed previously.

And I wish someone woulda told the comics owner to close his mouth and stop standing there like a slack-jawed yokel..

I am not familiar with those early Fliesher cels. So you are say it is worth $120-$180K?

If that's the case...all I can say is wow. I know we all have emotional attachment to things but they were shoved in a one bedroom apartment. They could buy a house with that money.

I would say it's closer to the 100,000 mark...there were only 17 Fleisher Episodes and they were all done between 1941-1942 (Pre-WWII)...the fact that any survived from then makes it rare, the fact that it's a full body shot of Superman, ups the ante...and it looked (from a distance) super clean with no recognizable chipping or flaking on the cell.

Keep in mind that Action Comics #1 which was published 3-4 years before the Fleisher Episodes (1938) is one of the few books to hit the million dollar mark (March 2010).

Frame that bad boy, advertise the hell out of it, and you'll easily get 100,000 for it.

Is this just "Show and Tell" or did this guy know how much this was worth? I am very passionate about collecting but if everything was true; he was living in a one room apartment with a $100K item and not even framed or any kind of protection at all. Just being on the show; I'd be worried of having the item stolen.

I couldn't tell if it was an act or the guy was truly a clueless nimrod...but...anyone that collects these kind of things should have some basic knowledge on how to store/protect them as well as perceived value.

He said he paid several thousand for it, so he wasn't so clueless that he didn't know it was worth something...at least protect your investment....right?!
