This is my pick for the best film of the year. It's the true story of Chris McCandless, aka Alexander Supertramp, who after graduating from Emory University in 1990, left his life and family behind, and went on an epic adventure into the wilderness of North America. Maybe that sounds dry, but it's only the bare bones of an incredibly moving story, the rest of which I won't reveal. The film is directed by Sean Penn and based on the in-depth book by Jon Krakauer (who also wrote Into Thin Air). The narrative is further supplemented with insightful writings from McCandless' sister, and pertinent quotes from a variety of powerful writers whom McCandless idolized, such as Tolstoy and Thoreau.
I cannot recommend this film highly enough! It's the kind of movie you walk out of seeing the world a little differently, a little more deeply. My hope is that more people see it, and that it's nominated for Best Picture in 2008.
