Using a large abacus in the classroom
Price tags on grocery store items (instead of the bar code scan)
The end of the TV viewing day (w/ the Star Spangled Banner)
Cutting out a cereal box record
The anticipation of watching the holiday specials (or missing them for a whole year) 'cos everything's on DVD, Blu-Ray and cable
The kids in my old after-school class had never had Jell-o or Jell-o pudding that you had to make at home, only the pre-packaged, ready-made stuff you buy for lunches."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."Comment

Buying a comic book for 25cents at the 7-11 or grocery store
Seeing a movie at the theatres, missing the beginning, and being able to sit in the same seat until the second showing started.
winding your watch
carrying 10 cents in your pocket (eventually 25) to make a phone call at a telephone booth if neededIt's all good!Comment

I recently heard a story from a friend who teaches high school art and asked them to bring in some pots and pans to do a still life drawing. Many said they did not own pots and pans... and when asked how their parents cook dinner, the answer was Microwave.
Probably unaccustomed to using a phone tethered to a cord and wall socket.
It's pretty much impossible to find a pay telephone these days.
They automatically want to look at the picture in the digital screen once it's been snapped, because they probably have not experienced the need to have film developed.
Winding a watch or clock.
Even CD's are probably something very quaint these days. Do kids even go to brick and mortar music stores like HMV for actual music rather than video games?
Going to the library or set of encyclopedias to look something up rather than google.
How many homes actually have subscriptions to print newspapers anymore?Last edited by samurainoir; Aug 25, '11, 12:11 AM.Comment

Samarainoir's post reminded me of something. About 7 years ago, when I was teaching my after-school class, I asked the kids to bring in coffee cans of varying sizes to make some homemade ice-cream. About 6 kids out of 25 brought some. Most of the parents told me that they buy whole beans and grind them, and they didn't get freeze-dried coffee. I couldn't believe that. I'm not a coffee drinker anymore, but I actually thought it would be the other way around; that some parents would have gourmet coffee and the rest would buy Maxwell House or something. Not really something that affected the kids, until the art project thing was brought up. I just thought it was weird, that's all.
Carry on."Do you believe, you believe in magic?

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

Yeah, I guess in this age of Starbucks, I don't know anybody who really drinks instant coffee anymore. A friend of mine was reminiscing recently about how he used to make his mom coffee by adding the hot water from the kettle and stirring with a s****.
Also, no one really drinks juice from those big oversized tin cans either anymore. Cartons and plastic bottles and boxes are the norm.
I don't see ketchup and other condiments in glass bottles hardly anymore as well. Kids probably don't experience slamming the bottom of the bottle to get the ketchup to come out.
Pop in glass bottles is rare.
Most kids I know have electric spinning toothbrushes.
Halloween costumes that actually look like the character! not a plastic overalls/bib thing with the logo and picture of the character on it.

Honestly, I love these costumes more than the costumes of today. Especially for kids. They are not much better. And even little girl costumes are getting skanked out. Yeeech! This is a perfect costume: Mask and bib!Comment

isn't it time to start the Halloween countdown?
Just sayin'
:-)
Yeah, this is a very fascinating thread. I like thinking about these things.
I prefer the old world in so many ways, but I'd like to keep some of the new world charms. Just gotta make our own paths, I suppose.
Busy signal. It really has gone away. Call waiting and voicemail are all we get now.Comment
