OMG! That's really sad! I love his music. I saw him in concert once. I even made a recording of "Longer", (sung by me), for my ex-hubby. RIP Dan. Your music touched many, and you will truly be missed.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
thats horrible news. Just today we were playing this Christmas CD of Various groups and the song " Same Old Lang Syne " was on there, classic song he wrote!
An only child
Alone and wild
A cabinet makers son
His hands were meant
For different work
And his heart was known
To none --
He left his home
And went his lone
And solitary way
And he gave to me
A gift I know I never
Can repay
A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldnt wait
He earned his love
Through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand.
The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.
My brothers lives were
Different
For they heard another call
One went to chicago
And the other to st. paul
And Im in colorado
When Im not in some hotel
Living out this life Ive chose
And come to know so well.
I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, pap, I dont think i
Said i love you near enough --
The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.
Very nice epitaph, Mitch. This is sad news indeed. I remember learning that he was battling advanced prostate cancer back in 2004 and then never heard anything again. There wasn't really any news until now. They found this in a routine check-up just prior to his going on tour. The year before he had this same sort of exam, but the problem was missed, most unfortunately.
Anyhow, I really enjoy much of his music, as well. He was a great storyteller/writer, musician and singer. Rest in peace, Dan. You will be sorely missed.
