    Indiana State Fair stage collapse....

By now, I'm sure you've all seen the video (since network news and local news just love playing it over and over and over and over). 5 people initially lost their lives in this tragic event and a sixth girl passed on Friday from injuries sustained as a result of the event.

    A freak event.

An event NO ONE could have forseen.

Then, I heard on my local news tonight that, thanks to some lawyers, victims of the tragedy are now lining up to file lawsuits.

This news, to me, breaks my heart.

The collapse and deaths the result thereof were tragedy enough, but for lawyers to swoop in and decide to cash in on it is sickening to me.

Is there blame to be placed somewhere? Maybe. Was it a tragedy that could have been prevented? Who knows. It was a totally random act of nature, of God. Even had the Fair officials told people to evacuate, there was NO WAY of knowing that a freak straight line wind was going to come in and topple a structure as massive as that stage. Even had people been clearing out at the time, some may have still been caught as it fell.

There were heroes that day, to be certain. The civilians who, with peril to themselves, rushed to the wreckage to try and move it and get those trapped underneath to safety were the superheroes of that day and I think the actions of these lawyers are doing nothing but sullying their actions.

I mean, really---think about it. NO ONE could predict the stage collapse and, once it started, no one could have stopped it aside from an act of God. Who are the lawyers suggesting the victims sue? The State Fair? The organizers? The roadies and riggers that assembled the stage? The state of Indiana? It's ridiculous. Why not go ahead and sue God while you're at it...?

I feel sympathy for the victims injured in the accident and for the families of those who lost loved ones and I think that they would likely be taken care of financially by parties involved without having some ambulance-chasing, sensation-seeking lawyers getting involved...

In regard to this matter, I think Shakespeare was right when he said "Kill all the lawyers..."

I dunno, what do you guys think...?
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I think the case which might come closest to this is when bystanders were hit with a lamp-pole post in NYC. The wind pushed a Thanksgiving day parade balloon down to cause the accident. That might provide some guide as to what happens next.
