    The Mego Geek Factor

This is kind of a deep question for the geeks out there. Does a person's inherent geekiness cause him or her to collect Megos or does the act of collecting Megos cause a person to become a geek? I ask because I was able to give my wife and kids some good laughs this weekend. Too bad it was at my expense. We were going through a box of family photos at my parents' house and got to the album with elementary school pictures of my sisters and me. I had honestly forgotten what a dork I was. I was skinny, had thick glasses, reddish hair and was covered in freckles. In between laughing hysterically at my pictures, my daughter commented on how I was even a bigger geek as a kid than I am now.

There's obviously a pretty big correlation between collecting Megos and being a geek. The curious thing is that I didn't actually have very many Megos as a kid (just a few from the Batman line). My parents are immigrants from Spain, so their old world practicality kept toy purchases to a minimum. Here I am now, though, with an extensive Mego collection. So for me, I think my inner geekiness drives me to collect Megos as opposed to Megos turning me into a geek. How about you (assuming you're a geek, of course)?

I was pretty nerdy in school. When I look at my old photos, I often call myself a "goober" because it's obvious that I wasn't one of the cool guys. When I was in school, the cool guys were the athletic guys. But if you watch sporting events, you'll see that some sports fans act pretty nerdy themselves.

I think nerdiness or geekiness is cool. All of my best friends are geeks and nerds. I myself have always been a geek. The toys came later.

"I prefer to remain an enigma."

As far as I can remember, I was into the really sniggling nerdy details. I was pretty good at hiding it then, not so much now. I just feel I'm wired that way.

My son is away with his grandparents and called me last night to tell me that the Star Wars book he got had a different name for "Snaggletooth". No DNA test required on that one.

Toy collecting is a double whammy. Collecting is kind of a nerdy obsession even when it is something socially acceptable. But toys! Toys are something that kids play with... not grown-ups. Then you add to it, "well these particular toys are different superheroes, and they wear doll clothes"... and yep, pretty hard not to sound like a dork.

But I think if you grew up as a bit of a nerd, you know that it is way more fun to follow your passions than to conform.

I was never a conventional geek.

Due to my appearance and size...I was respected in high school...lol.

I played high school football...yet I was also member of both the chess and science-fiction club...lol.

I was liked by both jocks and nerds.

It's good to be both big and nerdy...best of both worlds...

I was never a true collector of toys per say until much later in my adult life.

But ever since I remember...I was always into model-making...so that probably lit my toy collecting fire over time....that...and Superman being my biggest superhero influence...despite the fact that I prefered Spider-Man comics as a teen...go figure...lol.
