"Free Energy" doesn't exist in our universe. It defies the laws of thermodynamics.

Every few months a bunch of misguided people or flat out con artists apply for all kinds of patents on "free energy" machines and try to find investors. Often news outlets who don't check science facts correctly will report on these things and lend the concept more credence.

All these machines just happen to work perfectly, right up until it's time for some independent testing. Then suddenly there's a few kinks that need to be worked out, or just a few little flaws to work on that require more funding before it can be tested properly.
