Mego Mother Load on "Storage Wars"

    Hi, Folks.

I never watch the A&E show "Storage Wars" but I clicked by it the other day and a guy bid on a storage unit FILLED with carded Mego figures and Star Wars figures. OMG! I was drooling! The guy was clueless and said "I have to go find a nerd now to tell me what this stuff is worth". About $12K, apparently. There was a minty carded Thor, Spidey, and other. Why don't these things happen to me? *Rhetorical Question*

I think it's episode #8 of the series in case anyone wants to look it up on TVGuide.com to see when it's next airing.

Rumor has it the producers assistant was a collector and it was set up. Not sure if that's true but wonder if he's a member here if it is. That was a sweet collection to not be involved in the community. Odd they would pick Mego a well known company that toy collectors would know, versus something like Star Wars a well known media line that all people would be at least familiar with. That was what made the rumor make sense to me. No collector that would put their figures in acrylic display cases would ever let them go to auction for failure of payment on a unit. It's not like they found a box of old comics that someone didn't know the value of, they were all in top dollar cases. I think the fix was in. Like the guy giving the appraisal would let him leave with those knowing he could make more on ebay in one week than he probably makes that quarter normally.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

I think this is the original (there's been several) thread on the episode, which discusses the subterfuge:

Tired of these bulls@#! shows. They couldn't make a real show about storage locker auctions, because there is nothing exciting about the usual bedbug infested mattresses and dusty x-mas decorations you find in them.

I have no respect for the people on these shows either, because they're all corporate puppets and that includes the American Pickers, who I used to like. Although Barry seems OK, the rest all suck.

I say a commercial for the new season prior to the Harry Potter flick. The various Storage pickers all gimmicked up their characters for the commercial. I do think in the initial episodes there was no acting in the way they hated Dave Hester, but now he is completely playing the villain and the one with his wife displayed him doing a mock bid and she placed her hand over his mouth. I immediately thought "the show is dead" not even reality tv anymore.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you like the Pickers now?

Well, I never really liked Frank. He's just a really, really annoying lowballer.

I think the show overall has gotten boring and like I said, most of the people doing these shows are puppets for corporate executives and are making fools of themselves. I mean, they did a frigging Reese's Peanut butter cup commercial. Once you do commercials and pushing products, say goodbye to any integrity you ever had.

...and don't get me started on the Pawn Star guys. I love the opening of that show, with all their "look, we're cool tough guys with our mean looks and sunglasses". Give me a break, you're 3 fat losers in the most scummy business going.

TV in general is just absolute crap these days.

Although one good one, was Flea Man. That was realistic...and of course they canned it.

Well, I think all the shows are rigged to a point. Pickers SEEMS the least rigged to me, but I may be way off. The fact that they had a 3 way crossover with Pawn Stars and American Restoration may prove me wrong, and they are all as equally fake.

As for Pawn Stars, I can watch it. Rick is okay, Big Hoss and the Old Man are jerks (or at least their "characters" are). Chumley is just a sitcom character on a reality show.

I like Pickers but I doubt it's all real. I have a good friend that deals in gas stuff and there's no way they get some of the prices they get for their stuff. I've watched stuff they picked sell for 3 times what I see it sit at shows for. Don't get me wrong, they hit deals but I feel they exaggerate it for the show.

I've done storage auctions myself for about 2 years, just prior to the show getting big. There are definitely deals to be found. Around here if you do furniture it's the best source. You can get a house load of furniture for $200. The best we've seen in my area was a brand new gaming lap top that was retail around $2000 that was pulled from a $35 closet sized unit. Still brand new and in the Fed Ex box it was shipped in, guy sold it for $1200 that week. Not bad for a $35 investment.

Again there are some stinkers too. Most of the competition is from Flea Market vendors that will flip the high dollar stuff and then set up on weekends at local places to move the smaller items. I've become friends with a few as a toy reference hoping to hit a nice find one day. Had a couple of small lots but nothing major.

Pawn Stars is my fave. It's not even reality TV it's a straight out sitcom. Business owner son with a grumpy dad, and a rebellious lazy child and his dumbass best friend. You couldn't set it up any better. For all the times Rick bad mouths his kid about buying stuff at stupid prices he's never gotten burned that I can remember. Speed boats, motorcycles, cars, pinball machines, the wrecked heli, hot air balloons, doesn't matter. Rick flips and in the end they make something on it. Gotta be a 100% set up packed around the few real deals that come through the door.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.
