I have a buddy studying journalism to be the next Lester Bangs, and he says The Scorpions aren't real metal, but hair metal. That's crazy talk. They're as metal as Priest or Maiden.

Any Steel Panther fans in the house?

70s Scorpions rule. That 80s stuff they did is lame.

Remember, Blackout came out in 82 and Love at First Sting came out in 84. I'll give in that half of that album was fairly wimpy, though! Anything after World Wide Live sounds different to me, and I don't care so much for it.

Every time this topic comes up here it has always been argued about what is true metal and what is not.

so what you are saying is that Run-DMC are not a true metal band?

Only when they did the "Walk This Way" song with Aerosmith.

The Scorpions bring up an interesting point. Can a really heavy metal band be called truly heavy metal and popular at the same time? I know many people wore Iron Maiden shirts back in High School but doubt that 90% of anyone could name a single song. I loved Black Sabbath with Ozzy and when he went solo with "Blizzard of Oz"; I loved that album....I didn't even care about the gimmicky bat eating goofy antics...it was just a great album that I enjoyed. Now you can hear "Crazy Train" played at almost every sports venue in the country and just about everyone knows Ozzy from his reality show, his wife Sharon on "America's Got Talent" and the endless commercials so is he still considered hardcore metal as I once remembered or just some over the hill junkie who is so wonked out from the crazy days that he can barely babble a complete sentence?

I used to like metal in my teens and twenties...but I outgrew out of that phase.

But I'm now strictly a Queen, Led Zeppelin, Rush...kinda of a guy.

I might like metal, but that doesn't mean I have no respect for tradition!

As Meule mentioned earlier, myself (Larry) and Paul (MM name: Daremo) from NOVEMBERS DOOM (The End/Sony Records) have been members here since 2005. I've been into metal about as long as I've been into toys.....my whole life, basically! Though I listen to much more than just metal these days, it'll always be a part of me.

I think people don't realise how popular and successful heavy metal music really is, on a global scale. While it might not be found at the top of the North American music charts these days, it still sells and draws big numbers overall, especially in Europe and parts of Asia. Ozzy is still considered a metal artist, certainly, even though he's become a household name (for better or worse) due to the tv show and commercials, etc. Bands like Maiden, Priest, Megadeth, etc., still draw large crowds and sell millions of albums across the globe, and have maintained steady careers for decades, whilst many of these pop artists might sell millions and be all over the charts for a few years, but more often than not become passe' and old-news very quickly.

Oh and I'm disappointed I didn't get to attend MDF this year because I really wanted to see Voivod and Coroner!

Not hair bands, not nu-metal, Metalcore or whatever. I mean Black Metal, Death Metal, classic old Heavy Metal, Speed/Thrash, Doom and the like. I like old Punk and Hardcore too.
Don't know if Fingers Metal Shop is still on WBAB here on Long Island...but that used to be the show to listen to back in the day (Mid 80's). Keith/Fingers is a really cool guy too. He was a regular at my cousin's video store from about 1990 - about '95. He was also big into the McFarlane/Spawn line. Now I think he does midday's on WBAB...Can't say for sure cause I can't stand WBAB anymore. Same "DINOSAUR" rock that they've been playing for the last 30 years. His Sunday Night Fingers Metal Shop show was probably the best thing that station had along with Moontrain Jazz show they had on Thursday nights. Fingers was the 1st place I heard Metallica...I think it was Master Of Puppets or Ride The Lightning. Also used to play stuff like Carnivore and S.O.D. Never got into the speed/thrash metal. Closest I think I came is probably Metallica and Motorhead. Motorhead was cool because they were on my favorite British show "The Young Ones". Seeing Lemmy sing "Ace Of Spades" in the middle of the show was just so out of place it was funny.

Yes Voivod and Coroner were killer! Hung out with Snake and Away from Voivod and they were some of the coolest down to earth guys!
Yes worldwide Metal is still huge but in the U.S. its considered teenage rebellion music and is looked down upon.

To be honest, I really don't like to speak so generally about most bands, because I'm somebody who finds most bands run of steam after a while and it's their early works I like most. Just like I like my toys vintage, I like mostly old music and movies better too.

I must say that the older I get, a lot of Metal (especially older Heavy Metal and current Black Metal) seems more and more lame and stupid.

I've been listening to The Runaways and The Damned more than anything else these days.
