How The States Got Their Shapes

Is anyone watching this on the History Channel? It has to be one the most interesting shows I've seen in a while. It has some very cool information on our states and how they were formed.

Did you know there was almost a 14th state with the original 13?
Did you know part of California was going to declare themselves the 49th state (on Dec 8th, 1941)?
Did you know the original state of Utah was bigger than Texas?
Did you know the largest cattle ranch is in Florida?
Why is there a West Virginia anyway?
What split the Carolina Territory into North and South?
How did Michigan get the Upper Peninsula?

    It's very interesting.

I just recently heard that California was trying to split. Make two states out of one? Is there any truth to that rumor?

I also heard that California was trying to put a ban on black cars because they attract heat more than other car colors. That one sounds kind of bogus to me.

Actually I think Mexico just rented them to the U.S. Because they are taking them all back.

But all of those states do have excellent Mexican food … And I do not say that insultingly.

I once heard that to this date no US president has ever been born and died under the same flag.

That sounds logical with so many states being added all the way up until the 1950's. Even with the more recent presidents; I think Obama would be the only current one with a possibility (if no additional states are added). Hawaii was added late '50's and he was born early '60's.

I haven't watched it but I think West Virginia was part of Virginia and split away after the Civil War. West Virginia borders Maryland just about everywhere which would have made an invasion into Maryland pretty easy.

I do know that Maryland has a lot of natural boundaries which I think is how Maryland got most of its shape. Between the Chesapeake Bay, various rivers, and mountains along with visiting all of the bordering states, know that most of the state boundaries have some type of river seperating it. I also know that Washington D.C. was carved out of Maryland and part of Virginia.
