      I think it was also common practice in Biblical Times for a brother to marry his brother's widow or at least the custom. I also know it was fairly common practice even in the U.S. going back not that long ago (especially in farming communities). My mom's mom died when she was very young (7 kids) so my grandfather married her mother's sister. I also have a great grandfather...same sort of situation. Wife died young leaving him with a lot of kids and he ended up marrying his wife's sister. I guess back then when farming families were big and communities were small, there really weren't a lot of options for many widowers.
