    English Bulldog Rescue.

My wife and I volunteer to an English bulldog rescue in southern NJ. We made our first foster (Max) a member of our family. Here Max is with his new sister Molly and new Brother Brewtus. Max is the last one on the right.

Heavensent is running out of people who want to help and volunteer, in the past week 6 bulldogs have come into rescue, with the struggling economy people are giving up their dogs.

If you live in NJ, PA, Delaware, or Maryland and can or want to help. go to HeavenSent Bulldog Rescue / English Bulldog Rescue and Adoption in NJ or my website http://www.gregturpin.com enter the site and click on English Bulldog Rescue. We are in desperate need of volunteers.

    thanks for your time

    Greg

I'm very surprised bulldogs need rescuing

They seem like the kind of dog who's owners are older, wiser and keep them for life.

As opposed to a status/fashion dog like a pitbull

it honestly is surprising, the problem is when people get the dog and realize they are alot of work they just dont want to deal with it, when we did one of our first home visits to an older couple to see if they were a match for a bulldog, one of their responses was. "oh we spend alot of time in the summer outside in the heat we love it the bulldog can stay outside with us all day". that was the end of their home visit and we did not place a dog with them, bulldogs cant be in heat or cold for a long period of time, wrinkles have to be cleaned on a daily basis.

the most common thing we hear when a bulldog is surroundered is "were having a baby and dont want the dog anymore" or that "we just dont want the dog anymore"

we did a transport for a bulldog yesterday from north jersey to south jersey and the man that found him was a maintenence man for an apartment complex, the owners owed rent and left the apartment and left the dog in a crate to die, thank god for the maintenance man who rescued the dog and called us.

the 6 bulldogs that were surroundered last week.

one was a marine who was being deployed and had to give up the dog.

another couple had 2 bulldogs and the husband didnt wanna deal with them anymore

another was confined to a kitchen because the mother was allergic to it and it just never left the kitchen.

a sadder note is the dog on my site "hobo" his owner was terminally ill with cancer and could no longer care for the dog because he was to sick, and it was very sad when he surroundered hobo, alot of tears :( the man had no family who wanted the dog and now hobo is having seperation anxiety from his owner who had him for 10 years. and thats very old for a bulldog

The ones that really kill me are the people that are fine situation-wise and "just don't want the dog anymore". Don't get how anyone can be that cold and selfish.

You'd think, but it's actually a little different. The owners who cannot keep their dogs for whatever reason may seek out a rescue network to try and make sure that even though they cannot take care of their dog that it will live with someone who can take care of it. As opposed to just dropping it off at the pound.

My first two boxers were pound dogs and my third boxer was from a boxer rescue group. My only issue with rescue groups is they can be a little nosier than I'm willing to put up with, and even a bit judgmental at times. It was not what I would call a good experience, but I did what I needed to do to give another boxer a good home.

Many years ago I had a similar experience with a rescue group.

In the end we wound up going to the dog catcher (in the sticks "the pound")

Got a nice mutt and he was with us for 15-ish years (until he died)

I have heard some horror stories about rescue groups, Heavensent is one of the good ones , for us tho we might be a little "nosier" then we should but the main point is we dont want the dog or dogs to go back and forth between homes as its very hard on the dog. take hobo for example, he is suffering from seperation anxiety because hes away from his owner who he was with for 10 years. we dont want him going from home, to home to home to home.

Bulldogs are much harder to keep up and maintain...despite their girth...they are rather a delicate breed.

Pitbulls on the other hand are basically hands-free dogs.

                          Exactly.

Hip dysplasia seems to be a huge problem with them as well.

Beautiful dogs...too bad they tend to have short lifespans...although not as bad as a Great Dane.
