I come from NY and lots of people have come from here and become successful. If I had to keep it local there are a handful from the suburbs where I live.

Patrick McGoohan, (Secret Agent Man, The Prisoner, Braveheart), was born in Astoria, Queens, NY and his family moved to Ireland.

Christopher Walken, (Deer Hunter, Dead Zone) is also from Astoria, Queens, New York.

Simon & Garfunkel, (musicians /actors), went to Forest Hills High School, near the area where I grew up; Corona, NY.

Louis Armstrong, Satchmo, resided in Corona, Queens, New York, at the time of his death mere blocks from where I grew up as a kid. He was interred in Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, in Queens, New York.

Ray Romano, (Everybody Loves Raymond), attended Hillside High School in Queens. They did an article on him back in 1999. They said his teachers always busted him for being a class clown and frequently reprimanded him saying he would never amount to anything. Romano probably laughs that off every day he goes to the bank.

Jerry Seinfled, (Seinfeld), and his family come from Brooklyn & moved to Massapequa, Long Island.

Bernadette Peters & Cyndie Lauper, (musicians /actors), are from Ozone Park, Queens, New York.

Howard Stern, (radio personality/actor), was from Jackson Heights, Queens before moving to Long Island.

The members of KISS were mostly from NY, except Gene Simmons, (Paul Stanley born in Manhattan, New York and moved to Queens , Gene Simmons born in Israel and his family family emigrated to Jackson Heights, Queens, Peter Criss born in Brooklyn, Ace Frehley from the Bronx).

Isaac Asimov, (Author), was born in Russia and his family emigrated to the US. He became a US citizen & a native New Yorker.

Richard Feynman, who discovered the flaw in the space shuttle in 1987, was born in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York.

Jackie Gleason, (The Honeymooners), was born in Brooklyn & attended John Adams High School in Queens & Bushwick High School in Brooklyn.

Martin Landau, (SPACE:1999, Mission Impossible), Eddie Murphy, (comic/actor/singer), & the late Carl Sagan, (scientist/astronomer/writer/tv personality) are all from Brooklyn.

Sam Bowie is not only from my home town, he and his sister were also my babysitters when I was a wee tot. Most people probably don't even know who he is. I guess he is most famous for getting picked ahead of Michael Jordan in the draft.
I know who he is. Whenever I hear his name I think of shin splints which is what derailed his NBA career. As you said, he was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers one spot ahead of MJ, as the second overall pick in the 1984 NBA draft. Akeem (the dream) Olajuwon was number 1. The Trailblazers already had Clyde (the glide) Drexler whom they drafted the year before so it didn't make sense for them to draft another 2 guard.

I am both an NBA and NFL fan.
