It is one of the single most important events in World History.

I have always wondered what would have happened had Pearl Harbor never occurred.

Is it possible that we would have never entered the war? Would the Reich have been able to conquer the Soviet Union on the Eastern front while holding back on the British Empire so as not to have been engaged in a full-scale two front war?

So many what if's.

There is a movie from the 80's (forget name) where an aircraft carrier from the 80's goes through a time warp and is sent back just before Dec 7th, 1941. They easily have the fire power to stop the attack but decide if they save the 3000+ lives there, it would change the course of history, and US would never enter the war, quite possible letting Germany win the war.

It was an OK movie, but the meaning behind it was cool.

The date is only memorable because we've been told to remember it. There's no real reason to commemorate events every 365 or 366 days.

Sadly few people remember to even have a moment of silence let alone actually think of what the importance of the day was. I think eventually the US would have gone to war even if Japan hadn't attacked but if you ahve ever seen the movie Fatherland HBO made in the 90's that is what the face of Europe might well have looked like.

The film was called "The Final Countdown" starring Kirk Douglass as the captain of the U.S.S. Nimitz..interestingly the screenplay was written by Gerry davies ..one of the co-creaters of the cybermen.

....I doubt that very much....Yes the help from U.S helped mount an offensive to start pushing the axis forces back but Britain had stood alone against the germans for nearly 2 years before you entered the war. We had already won the "Battle of Britain" and were on the verge of the first victory against the axis forces in North Africa( july 42), and yes I concede that many sherman tanks were transported to the north african campaign for the El Alamien battle...but it was mainly a mixture of English and commonwealth troops that caused the first cracks to be formed in the previously unbeatable german army and air force.
I don't mean to sound picky but it does irk me somewhat to hear americans saying we saved your butt in ww2....it demeans the sacrifice and pain we as a nation (and most of europe) went through....We stood alone and said NO to the nazi's and to be honest had to wait for the U.S. to procrastinate (admittwedly the convoys and aid was appreciated) before Pearl Harbour forced you into the war.
Sorry didn't mean to rant....its just something I feel very strongly about..no offence to you type1kirk

I am not a mod, but lets not get political here. I don't think what Type1Kirk said was serious, but I see how you would be upset about.

Lets not forget why this topic was started, to remember the attack on Pearl Harbor.

No problem type1kirk....kinda guessed that ...but I can't help ranting over things like that...YES Pearl Harbour day should be recognised and remembered every year as should many other huge loss ..particularly military memorials ...these people put their lives on the line for us ...even now in the gulf and other conflicts....yes they may be doing it for the wrong reasons or on the whim of our so called leaders ( even Pearl Harbour is shrouded in conspiracy as to wether the attack WAS known about and was allowed to go ahead just so the U.S. could enter WW2), but at the end of the day they are the same as us ...people....people fighting for us so we don't have to. ...and I for one will NEVER forget that.
As mentioned in this post too many people know too little about what has gone on before ,for them, and the losses that have gone with it.

I'd just like to apologise for my previous post on this thread. It was not intended to be a personal attack on type1kirk (whose threads I enjoy), or on Americans in general. Its just this subject is one that's close to my heart and my heart ruled my head whilst typing.

I honestly have never heard anyone say "we saved your butt in WWII" in reference to England....I have heard it in reference to France but I think that's only because of the mounting frustration over the last couple of decades. Needless to say, if it hadn't been for France, we could have and probably would have lost the American Revolution.

I think most would agree that the U.S. has always considered England and Canada to be our two biggest allies. Most people don't even realize that Canadian volunteered to attack the most heavily fortified beach at Normandy and experienced a higher % of casualties than the U.S. or England on D-Day.
