Just saw a mobile speed camera!!!

It was a Hummer type vehicle sitting on the side of the road with a camera mounted on its hood and lights on either side of it.

Fortunately, I have never received a ticket from one but this just bugged me at so many levels. They have them located in spots throughout the state and most people I talk to think they are not really a deterrent but just a way for the state to rake in the revenue. They have always been easy to avoid in the past if you knew where they are located but now with a mobile unit like the one I saw; they can just set up shop anywhere.

Scottsdale, AZ (and many of the towns around) is littered with them, as well as regular permanent installations that often are combination speed/red light cameras. Big Brother exists, and he lives in Arizona.

Is this the fate of unsold Hum-Vee's? To be fitted with cameras, lights and radars and sit like silent watchers?

Aren't those major gas guzzlers? And we're supposed to be paying for all this? Unbelieveable.

We don't have such things in the sticks

The most thing we ever had as a speed deterrent was the town bought a junk car from the junkyard and had it towed to a spot along the road.
They painted it like a cop car.
It was basically a cop car scarecrow

It actually did work on people not from the town

Its a joke here, they actually tell U with a sign, that there is a speed camera coming up, so everyone slows down, and then speeds up. Some of them are just fake anyway.

I have seen fake State Trooper Cars. They are wooden flat cutouts painted to look just like a State Trooper and it looks real until you pass it. I think this was a test run. The Hummer looked like a private company (not a police car) and I suspect snapping pics of everyone exceeding the speed limit and handing the results back to the state. To me, there are some very legit reasons to go past the speed limit. If everyone is driving 65 in a 55 zone; I would think it would be more dangerous to drive 55 rather than drive the speed limit. I also have had instances where I have had aggressive drivers tailgating me and I can't move over to let them pass so I speed up to avoid a potentially dangerous situation. You can't explain that type of stuff to a speed camera.

I seen a couple of police cars with "dummies" in them before here in MO. No, I mean dummies as in fake looking people that is.

They had it sitting on a freeway here in MD. I think it was right at a spot where the speed limit changes from 65 to 55. I don't know if it was doing a test run or will really be sending out tickets.

They don't need to be fast....just sit there and take pictures of license plates.

Two of the leading manufacturers of red light camera systems are based in Arizona....

Arizona-based Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., one of the nation’s leading red-light camera companies, has spent as much as $230,000 on lobbying activities in Austin since 2007, state records show. Another leading company, American Traffic Solutions Inc., also based in Arizona, has spent up to $20,000.
