I repair computers for a living and I am pretty safe about protecting my PC from Viruses and malware.
Yesterday I had one hell of a scare I figured I would share here.
This girl I know called me up crying she had a computer virus and begged me to come save her computer.
After tinkering with her computer. I realized she never even had an virus protection and the worm had destroyed just about everything. It would freeze up and it wouldn't even let me install a Norton program I had on my external drive plugged into her USB.
So, I told her I was going to have to wipe the whole computer and reformat it and reinstall XP. I suggested she save a few personal pictures and some of her school work on my external drive so she wouldn't lose them. She did so.
Well, I reformatted her drive and reinstalled XP and left. I got home and plugged my external drive into my computer and my Norton went insane on me.
I am not sure what happened but it wiped out my auto start on my external drive and wouldn't allow my computer to recognize it. I was crapping bricks because I had all my personal music and pictures on there. My brother has a backup of my music but not all my personal pictures.
So.....
I went into the drive through the folders option through my computer and I was able to take a look around and still see all of my stuff was intact. I ran the Norton on my external drive and it found three viruses. I am assuming she must have had the virus in her personal pictures or it somehow moved itself there. I still have no idea how it happened.
The Norton took the three little pests and placed them into a virus vault where I was able to dispose of them properly.
Fixing my external drives auto start was easy. I went to Western Digital's website and re-downloaded the auto start and the drive icon. Rebooted my computer and all was well.
Just to cover my butt, I ran the Norton on my PC and it found nothing.
Talk about close call.
I guess I learned a lesson about virus. Once they get into your PC they can spread just about anywhere. After sweating about 50 lbs off worrying about the destruction of my personal pictures. I spent the day uploading them to a private folder on myspace. Now I have backups of everything.
