What is the proper way of addressing a former US President ?

Was talking to a buddy about this.

As an example, if you were directly speaking to Jimmy Carter, would you call him ....

    Mr President
    Mr exPresident
    Mr former President
    Mr Carter
    other

I think the title Mr President sticks for life.
    am I correct ?

Yes, I believe that "Mr. President" is the proper title for any current or former President.

          That's what I've noticed with interviews with ex-Presidents. It's always Mr.President.

Sometimes in the news they refer to them as "Former President" so as not to confuse people at home who might think they time traveled.

It's the same way with other political offices too....I've recently heard Ahnuld referred to still as "Governor Schwarzanegger" and former Sec. of State referred to as "Mr" or "Madame" Secretary
