It is during the scene when Dreyfuss examines the body of the girl. There is a cut in there that is very wrong. He picks up the arm and says "See this is what happens" Then it cuts to Roy....I think the editor made a mistake and no one noticed. Anyone else notice it?

Mistake in movie Jaws?

That arm was cut in exactly the right place....
Hmm, I'd have to watch Jaws again. Can't say I've noticed, even after about 10 viewings. The editor was a seasoned pro, so I have my doubts.
There were more obvious "mistakes" in Jaws, of course. During several scenes, it goes from sunny to cloudy to dark to light within seconds, because they had so much trouble filming..

Spielberg was asked about that exact "this is what happens" sequence in Empire magazine a while ago.
The reason that edit seems a little jarring is because there was extra dialogue which was excised from the final cut of that scene, with the line being pieced together over the shot of the arm.
To quote Spielberg's response exactly:
"I remember this very well. I had cut out a line of dialogue and inside the line of dialogue I manufactured artificially a new line: 'This is what happens.' Originally, he said more than that. I can't remember what he said exactly. (Editor) Verna Fields and I pieced together, 'This is what happens,' from other words he was saying because the scene was too long. I was able to cut a huge -- maybe 30-second -- part of the scene out, simply by cutting to the insert of the arm coming up and putting the words, 'This is what happens,' over it."

The biggest mistake I have seen in Jaws is when the shark is backing away from the cage just before Hooper swims out. You can see the mechanical rigging attached underneath the Shark's belly. Clear as day. Hopefully they will clean that up before it's put out on Blu Ray.Comment
