    Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie...

    Ok gang, this is an absolute must see;

The exploits of Bigfoot hunters and researchers, Wayne Burton and Dallas Gilbert in "Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie". This documentary hits home with me, and I'd have to put it in my top 5 docs of all time. I don't think anything will ever top "American Movie", but boy, does this come ever so very close. This truly is an amazing film. Like "Marwencol", which has also been discussed here, the film isn't really about what one would think... At it's core, this film is a human story about two truly extraordinary men who have really made an impression on me. One of them, even has sheep DNA and an animal bone in his skull... You just HAVE to see it.

"I like Bonanza, I was just messin' with her... Haas is my favorite."

I've read a lot about the players who search and hunt for Bigfoot, who run websites and take people on expeditions into the forests in some states and they are a can`o worms all their own. I'll have to see this if I can.

      Found the trailer on youtube:

        Sheep DNA? Wha!?
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

            My top 23 docs ever;

1)"American Movie"-- Aspiring filmmaker Mark Borchart and his struggle to make a feature film with his friends in Milwaukee, WI. Mark actually became somewhat famous as a result... Unfortunately, not as a filmmaker.

2)"Facing Ali"-- Phenomenal interviews with all of the top fighters who faced Ali in his prime. Ken Norton, George Foreman, Leon Spinks, George Chuvalo and Ron Lyle are included in this fascinating tribute to a great champion.

3)"Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie"-- The exploits of Dallas Gilbert and Wayne Burton in their search for the mythical Bigfoot.

4)"The Kid Stays in the Picture"-- Incredibly well done documentary about the great Robert Evans, producer of such films as "The Godfather", "Marathon Man", "Love Story" and "Rosemary's Baby". Filled with great interviews and narrated by Evans himself, this is by far, one of the most entertaining Hollywood docs ever made.

5)"Blue Water, White Death"-- Australian spearfishing champion Ron Taylor and his wife Valerie join Peter Gimbel in his search for the great white shark.

6)"Dogtown and Z-Boys"-- Chronicles the adventures of the infamous Z-Boys, a group of cutting edge skateboarders and surfers in Venice Beach, CA in the 70's.

7)"Drive"-- The skateboarding life of pro Mike Vallely on the road. Mike's skating and passion for the sport is super inspiring and touches even those who have never even been on a skateboard.

8)"Bigger, Stronger, Faster"-- My good friend Chris Bell's documentary about steroids in professional sports. The most interesting part of this doc, is the perspective; Both of Chris's brothers, Mark and Mike are on steroids

9)"Pumping Iron"-- The first doc ever about the sport of bodybuilding. Follows Arnold and his cronies at the Mr. Olympia contests in the 70's. Classic.

10)"Breaking Down the Door"-- Profile of Rabbit Bartholemew, Shaun Thompson and Mark Richards, three of the "Bronzed Aussies". World champion surfers from Australia, who invaded Hawaii in the 70's and rode those waves like no one ever had before them, paving the way for the modern surfing style.

11)"Murderball"-- Follows wheelchair rugby player Mark Zuppan in his quest for the championship in his sport. Very inspiring and gritty doc.

12)"Rising Son"-- The life and times of 80's skateboard legend Christian Hosoi. This one is more sentimental to me, because I skated with Christian back in the day and was at Del Mar for the famous Hawk/Hosoi wars. Very well done with a great soundtrack.

13)"Supersize Me"-- Morgan Spurlock's expose on fast food where he eats McDonald's 3 times a day for a month. Best part about this doc, is that even though it obviously was an anti McDonald's/fast food movie, the first thing I did after watching it, was eat a Big Mac and fries.

14)"Lost in La Mancha"-- Terry Gilliam's trials and tribulations in Spain, while trying to make his "Don Quixote" film. Another one that hits me close to home as a filmmaker. It was good to see that even the big boys struggle sometimes and lose a battle every now and then.

15)"Painting With Fire"-- The life and phenomenal work of my favorite painter; Frank Frazetta.

16)"Brett the Hitman Hart, Wrestling with Shadows"-- Revealing and touching doc about Brett Hart and his dealings with the WWF and Vince Mcmahon, ending with the infamous "Montreal Screw Job."

17)"Roman Polanski, Wanted and Desired"-- One of my favorite directors, who fled back to France after raping an unde aged girl during a photo shoot in the 70's. Fascinating look at his career and the events surrounding his fleeing to France, never to return.

18)"The Filth and the Fury"-- The rise and fall of the Sex Pistols. A must for any Pistols fan or the punk movement in general.

19)"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster"-- Unbelievable look into the life of the biggest metal band of all time. I dug this one a lot because it focused so much more on their personal lives as opposed to the music, which I found incredibly interesting.

20)"The Radiant Child"-- The tragically short life and work of NY painter Jean Michel Basquiat. I grew up in NY and in the early-mid 80's I spent a lot of time in the city and remember seeing his SAMO graffiti in the Bowery district. I love his work and his odd, quirky sense of not only the world around him and how it influenced his art, but himself as well.

21)"Do You Believe in Miracles?"-- 1980 US Olympic hockey team story. Nuff said.

22)"Easy Riders, Raging Bulls"--Doc about the most prolific filmmakers of the late 60's and 70's, when directors truly were kings. This one is brilliant, but in a way, super hard to watch for me. It's hard to believe that this industry has gone so downhill and is run more by execs and bean counters, instead of artists. Great stories and insights from Julia and Michael Phillps as wella as Paul Schrader, Lucas, Spielberg, Scorcese, Coppola, John Milius, etc... All the 70's greats.

23)"The Universe of Keith Haring"-- I met Keith Haring in NYC in the subway one day when I was 14 years old and he drew a character on my skateboard. Always been a huge fan. Another sentimental one for me.

I saw it about a year ago. Though well made, I thought it was very depressing and sad. It's really a documentary about mental illness and obsessive disorders more than anything else. The whole Bigfoot angle is almost irrelevant. It shares a lot in common with the documentary "I Think We're Alone Now", about those two old guys who are obsessed with 80's Pop star, Tiffany.

Both films are streaming at Netflix.

Thanks for the list of documentaries. I will check some of them out.

Hoop Dreams is one of my favorites. Actually got to cover Anthony Agee, one of the two basketball player featured in the doc, a few times when he played at Arkansas State. He was a good kid.

                      Good list, Sandy...

But I'm surprised you didn't list Riding Giants and The Cove.

But you did list Dogtown and Z-Boys...I dig Stacy Peralta (Riding Giants too).

I HATE Morgan Spurlock and his stupid Supersize Me...you should check out Tom Naughton's Fat Head...a clever counterpoint to Supersize Me...

                        Hec,

The ones you listed are great as well. I own over 100 documentaries-- hard to choose. The list originally started as a top ten, then grew to a top 15, then a top 20, then eventually wound up where it is because I just got tired of typing... LMAO!
