Smallville - final episode

Eve though the last few seasons have not been that good, I will miss this show. I think they could turn it into some Superman movies going forward, although I know this will not happen.

and tipical smallville style they did a slow 2 parter and no real showdown with the bad guy and even though he was in the suit for a few shots no real standing proudly showing everyone SUPERMAN.

That pretty much sums up Smallville's entire run.

"All Smallville needed to do was put Tom Welling in a $25 lycra Party City Superman jumper and hoist him up with some Mary-Martin-Peter-Pan wirework, and fans would have been screaming their lungs out. Inept-YES! Because they don't know how to write super hero stories. But wasn't the show *not* about being a super hero? Perhaps. Maybe it was a show for 7 year old girls and up to watch when iCarly wasn't on because Tom Welling was so dreamy.

Intentional-also YES! Because they're getting paid no matter what. So why show some ballz and tell Warners you want to end the series embracing Superman. If you actually show Welling in the costume people might expect him to play Superman in the next movie reboot. When they find out he's not in it-it might hurt box office receipts. Plus Welling doesn't want to wear the suit. He will never, ever play Superman. He's afraid of being typecast. The joke's on him tho. He already is! Also see reasons above.

Smallville fans will say, well you hate the show no matter what so nothing about it would ever make you happy. Well, maybe if they had tapped the producers of Batman, Superman and the Justice League Animated shows, promoted them to producing live action the show would have been better and had a more memorable 10 year run. Instead of a *glimpse* of the Legion of Doom you would actually get the Legion of Doom, or Darkseid, etc. On the other hand the animated guys are having great success in direct to video animated features based on popular DC super heroes. Y'know, the kind that wear costumes, act like their comic-book counterparts, don't whine so much, and inspire people, with no end to their success in sight.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine who'd fall into the "apologist" category the article points out; and he agreed with my conclusion. "Smallville" was absolutely brilliant, but in the same way "Twilight" is: it gives you just enough of a taste of the concept, characters, situations, etc. that you can read into them pretty much whatever you want. Half of the story is completed by you, in your own head; which means it's tailor-made. IF you can get on board early on. If not, it'll feel like the worst thing you've ever forced your optic organs to endure; especially if you're alreasdy a Superman fan since you won't see any of the stuff you personally were wanting.

Part of the problem is that superheroes are silly.... INTRINSICLY silly. I don't mean that in a BAD way though, it's that a superhero story is bigger than life; bigger action, bigger abilities, bigger characters, bigger ideals.... those things scare a lot of tv/film producers who want stories that are more "grounded" and "relatable." So you get weird half-hearted takes on things. ("Would you prefer yellow spandex?" Sure; it worked for 20 years in the comic.) When "Unbreakable" made a lot of money it made it okay for superheroes to not wear tights any more, and consequently the idea that you can do a superhero with a little less super.

Yes but in the end if you eliminate the Super and move too much away from what the character is, it falls flat cause even the non superhero follower will say that's stupid and boring......

Superheroes are about escapism if you take away their WOW factor you will bore everyone.

In Unbreakable even though there was no costume...you had all the elements of a noble but confused hero and still gave you a moment where you cheered for the hero and sneered at the villian.

Many times these newer versions disrespect the Original source material and slap the viewer in the face by saying we think it's corny and we are embarrassed to do it the WAY you like.A big slap to the face for the fans.

Smallville I understand was about Clark before he becomes Superman but you cannot escape that he is Superman and the fans Just asked: "give us one episode where we can see when he finally steps and fulfills his calling" NOT tease the Fans for two freaking hours and then just give them a little nibble in the last five minutes total cop out....and why Smallville fell flat on it's face......this show went on far too long for it's own good

Yup; that's my point. "Unbreakable" pulled it off 'cos it was an unknown property: folks had few expectations going in. It wasn't even advertised as a superhero movie, which I suspect took a lot of folks by surprise.
