Super interesting, relevant story; Years ago, when I was up North at the Lucas Ranch, getting approval on a bunch of toy sculpture prototypes, I was invited to a party that night. I was staying the night anyway and flying back the next day, so I went... At this party, I met some of the designers and concept artists that worked on the prequels. One of them (who shall remain nameless), whom I'd met before actually, told me that Spielberg had come up to visit George while they were in pre-production on Episode 1. He continued to say that while there, he overheard a conversation between Lucas and Spielberg in which Lucas was trying to convince Spielberg to re-do all of the shark sequences in "Jaws" with a CG shark, then re-release the film...

    I believe it.

I can certainly believe it. I think CGI has become George Lucas's crack. Anyone remember the Robot Chicken skit that imagines a JAWS special edition with CGI improvements. It ended with the explosion of the shark having a force wave

But George (or it could be Steven, but it seems more like George) is now sneaking in CGI changes to the Indy films. I caught some of Raiders Of The Lost Ark on USA in HD. This is a movie I have watched enough to know it by heart.

So, I am watching the truck chase. and seeing where Indy knocked a Jeep with Nazis off the cliff. In the original, the jeep and Nazis were stop motion animated over a pan down of a matte painting.

Imagine my surprise when I saw this scene and all the the sudden that matte painting had perspective shifts.

Yup, the original scene was replaced with CGI and I wasn't the first one to notice (please note his title is NSFW):

Is that on the Bluray? I've only seen the old DVD and my VHS copy a billion times.

It's not terrible, but, yeah, why?

Did they remove stuff like the reflection of the cobra against the glass protecting Ford when he fell into the Well of Souls scene?

Not to be picky, but I don't think they used animation for that originally - I would guess that it's just a model shot in high speed with a matte painting behind it.

I remember reading in Starlog where the jeep and soldiers were stop motion animated (possibly using what used to be called the go-motion process to give motion blur)

From what I hear, the CGI scene was not in the initial DVD release but it was in the re-release of the DVD and is sure to be in the blu ray.

Hey, fair enough! To me they always just looked like tiny models falling down, especially the way the bodies just flop over - so I just think that's odd, but I don't know for sure or anything!

I've only got the old DVD. I've seen it hundreds of times and it's one of my all time favorite movies - but (and this is going to sound dorky) when they started calling it "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" it just kinda turned me off picking up the bluray somehow.

When ever I'm in the mood to watch Indy I end up watching "the Adaptation". Have you seen that? All those kids running around nearly killing themselves? It's THE BEST! I soooo wish I knew those guys growing up.

It's not out on blu ray yet

I saw the adaptation on the big screen at an event that brought in the guys that made it but I don't have my own copy (you do?)

Redoing the shark, and the "conversation" Sandy's friend heard are a
NO BRAINER... people made fun of that shark from the start....
unlike Lucas' SW changes which were never really instigated by flat out criticism.

                I love the first one

thought I liked the 2nd one, but saw it again not long ago and couldn't stand it ... I was shocked at how much I didn't like it

3rd one I saw at the theater, and really not a fan back then and really don't care to see it again

BTTF is a Sci-Fi dramedy. I think a better comparison would be to My Science Project, Timerider - The Adventure of Lyle Swann and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Tho BTTF 3 does try to break with old western cliche's it also employed a lot of old TV & movie Western character actors in the Saloon & Hoedown scenes.

The second was a little too dark for me. I actually like the 3rd quite a bit, but neither hold a candle to the first.
