Might be heading to the "D" soon, might have a little down time if there is a cool haunt I'd appreciate knowing.

My studio partner used to live in Detroit, I'll get the name of the comic shop he used to take me to that was packed floor to ceiling with display cases when I see him tomorrow. Their selection was mind-blowing, but the prices weren't that great, and one of the guys who works there suffers from the simpson's comic book guy affliction, although the other guy was really nice. You'll definitely want to go look.
My other favorite place is in Anne arbor, but that's off the track from Detroit proper. That place is more statues and vinyl though, and I know you're about the vintage.Last edited by samurainoir; May 10, '11, 8:40 PM. -
sounds like the first place you mentioned could easily be Warp 9 that's close to royal oak, and the second sounds like Vault of Midnight in Ann Arbor.
I don't even know if I'm going to be able to make it out to motor city this weekend, will be the first time in like 10 years.Comment

I am a transplant from Detroit.
And let me tell you, I spent a lot of time looking at awesome toys at Time Travelers. It s the first time I ever saw a Mego outside of my childhood. And so many figures I'd never actually seen.
However, I would only ever go there to look around. Put headphones in and peruse the shelves.
I purchased some things, but on two occaossions was cheated by the unscrupulous owner. When I was a kid I put a 12" Star Wars Boba Fett on Layaway. And when I cam back to buy it, they had swapped it with a damaged one. It didn't even match their own written description. I actually overheard one of the employees telling a friend he had just traded his 12" Boba Fett in because it was damaged.
Anyway, sorry about the rant, but I HATED that experience. And it took me years to get comfortable enough to buy from anywhere but retail.
Anyway, enjoy your visit. It is an amazingly friendly city with lots of great small breweries and restaurants.Comment

I can almost guarantee the same Mego figures are still on the shelves that I saw when I lived and browsed there 20 years ago.
High prices, cluttered shelves, and very poor customer service, as noted by others.
Brian
have fun at the Con,
and enjoy a couple of Coney Island's and cold Stroh's while you're in town.

Time travelers is the place I was thinking of. Showcases full of vintage megos, captain action, shogun warriors, micronauts and every thing else you can think of. This is the one place you want to go look, but also likely to experience condescension if you make the mistake at inquiring about anything.Last edited by samurainoir; May 11, '11, 6:26 AM.Comment

Detroit is also home to the best used bookstore I've ever had the pleasure of visiting.
I always end up walking away with a huge box of treasures from John king books.
I could easily spend all day in this place. Multiple floors with ridiculously good prices for rare out of print stuff that I never see elsewhere all in one place.Comment

Thanks for the great input everybody.
RE: Time Traveller
He is well known in Canada as in the 80s he used to make the trek to Toronto comic shows at the masonic temple. Here is a recap of 16 year old Brian's first exposure to him:
Me: How much is that AHI Frankenstein?*
Him: You can't afford it (Turns his back to me)
That was my first encounter, it was my last. Eventually he was no longer welcome at our local comic cons due to an outburst. In my twenty plus years I've never met a person who had something nice to say about the attitude there.
* I had no idea what make the Frankenstein was in 1987, just that I wanted it. It was loose and in about c6 shape. Although the bindle I was carrying was likely misleading, I could have afforded it.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

I know we solved the mystery of why we never met prior to Mego Meet last year, but whenever you drop mention of stuff like this, I can't help but imagine you leaving the room to go dress up like Polk A Roo.
Were you also at that ludicrously sparse comicon at the masonic temple where Walter Keonig chatted with literally a handful of people (I think he was wearing his Star Trek 4 jacket)?Comment
