Along those lines I thought "Grace of my Heart" was a really underrated indie movie that went through a fictionalized history of modern pop music with characters loosely based on Carol King and Brian Wilson.
Grace of My Heart (1996) - IMDb
"Dreamgirls" is another recent one in that vein using the Supremes for their inspiration.
