This post reminds of something that happened after my mother died of lung cancer from smoking. Something very personal that I'll share with you all;
My father and I were cleaning out the garage, a few weeks after she passed, going through and getting rid of some of her things. My dad found a bag with about a half dozen cartons of cigarettes in it. He pulled them out of the bag, held them up to me and said; "Do you know anyone who would want these?" I looked at him like I've never looked at him before... The look basically said; "Your wife of over 35 years just died of lung cancer from smoking and you wanna give someone cigarettes???"
Now, you could say that he was emotionally stressed or that he made that comment "under duress" or whatever, but as much as I love and adore my father, the fact that he wanted to give someone cartons of cigarettes, especially after what just happened to my mom, shocked the hell out of me.
Years later, quite recently actually, I asked my father what he was honestly thinking at that moment. I mean, I really REALLY wanted to know honestly what his rationale was. He looked at me for a minute, started to break down in tears and said; "I'm embarrassed to tell you this son, but at that time, I was thinking that I paid good money for those cigarettes and didn't want them to go to waste... I can't believe that money would make me even think something so horrible like that, let alone say it..."
THAT'S what I thought of when I read this post.
No judgment on anyone, just sharing a very emotional, personal moment from life.

My Dad (bless his soul..), used to smoke 'em all the time.. Near the end I had to go in the stores and buy them for him, due to him being in the wheelchair. I finally made him get his own (tough love...). He past on about a year or so later.
