Disney and others can push downloads and streaming all they want, but as long as my cable company enforces a 60G download/upload cap, I won't be able to watch that much HD content via my internet, I would burn through my limit fast. So, I'll continue to buy hard copies instead as long as I can. I was planning to pick up this Blu-ray set too, and was surprised about the price. Probably just get the individual sets then, I don't care about the 3D version.

Disney is THE WORST company to deal with. When I ran a video store they were always pulling crap like "The last time it will be on Video..." I think everyone of their Videos were on "Moratorium" They were also the worst when it came to Macrovision/copy protected videos...to the point where their tapes had problems playing in VCR's. I hope to God that they don't pull that crap with Marvel. They just plain old suck as a company.

        Berto,

Yup, they are just another corporation out to get your money. That's all they care about these days but at least the kiddies love the company.
As for the moratorium, they are still doing it with DVD's and BR. Wait until the End of Year and next year when they are start doing the marketing. Never ends.

I kinda liked them when I worked at a video store. They seemed to send out more screener tapes and freebies than the other studios did.

Yep, they are still doing that "Back in the vault" crap. Reminds me that I have to hurry up and buy the Fantasia Blu-ray before it goes "back in the vault" in a month or so.

I have a thread on the deals currently offered on Tron and Tron Legacy over in the Sci Fi section. Here's the link...

Tron Legacy: Today's DVD and Blu ray specials - Mego Talk

Target is by far the best deal out there... That is if you can find a store that isn't sold out of the original Tron on Blu ray. Cuts your costs in half. Watch the original last night and it was incredible. The clean up was so good, it reminded me why I switched to the blu-ray format. This film looks practically brand new again. Just amazing what they can do with modern technology.

Disney's marketing gimmick is to rotate the classics once every 7 years. They sell them for a limited amount of time and then remove them from their shelves for 7 years. If you are a parent wanting to buy a Disney classic, it is either right then or be forced to buy it through secondary markets. Also, every re-release looks different. I have for example some of the very first Disney movies ever released on DVD. They re-released it in a special edition format, the next time a blu-ray format, now its 3-D. They have enough movies that they can make a big deal over releasing two or three classics through the rotation every year while also focusing on new releases. The mere fact that they advertise a 4th re-release of Bambi or whatever release it is on, tells me it must be working.

This is true...they also distributed other companies. Miramax was distributed by them as was Hollywood Pictures and Dimension Films. I think the Samuel Goldwyn Studio stuff was also distributed by them. I used to love getting those boxes with 5 or 6 promos in them every month. But those ended up dying out to. Less and less each year from them.

Yep, we were a small store, so it became harder and harder to get screeners from most studios as time went on (this was around 1995-1999), but Disney continued to give us goodies almost every month. But yeah, I do vaguely recall them eventually petering out as well.

I've been disappointed with the whole home-3D experience, but I don't want to wait another 10 years for Disney to "open-their-vaults" again for whatever new format is next (which is beginning to look like streaming video content is the way to go).

OTOH, I do like the Blu-ray/DVD combos. I have my PS3 and widescreen TV at home and keep the DVDs in the van for trips. We do a lot of highway driving and the movies really help pass the time.

It's funny because I have been thinking about how cheap I have been able to get the Disney blu-ray/DVD combos. Bambi, Alice In Wonderland, Beauty and The Beast, Fantasia/Fantasia 2000, Toy Story 1 and 2 (with TS3 I ended up buying a pack with a Buzz Lightyear figure otherwise it would be included) and the Trons I have all gotten for less than $15 each when they came out.

Of course I planned to buy them and also made a google check for coupons or had coupon info mailed to me because I am in Disney Movie Rewards.

Some coupons are "upgrade" coupons requiring you to enter the UPC from a previous DVD or VHS release to unlock. But although I usually had the previous releases in question I was able to get the needed numbers off the web (instead of digging it up) so I am sure people got the coupons without having then previous releases.

And it is Target that usually has the best deal and does take the coupons.
