    Sunday dinner, past and present

Was Sunday dinner a big deal in your house growing up? Is it now? Did you go to Gramma's or have company? What was served?

Sunday dinner in our house usually consisted of some kind of chicken dish; roasted chicken, chicken & dumplings, chicken and rice. The good smells emerging from the kitchen would drive me crazy all afternoon. And always something yummy for dessert; ice-cream, cake, tapioca. And we'd always finish just in time for The Wonderful World of Disney. Sometimes we'd spend Sundays at my GaGa's (gramma) house, and there'd be some chicken dish there too, w/ My-T-Fine chocolate pudding for dessert. But I liked Mom's cooking better.

Sadly these days, I have no one to cook Sunday dinner for, I was just waxing nostalgic (like we always do on this board! )

Any good memories of Sunday dinner?

we use to go out for dinner almost every Saturday or Sunday when I was a kid from ages 6-11,that was when my mom was married to my brother's dad...we always went to two different places one was "Los Chino's" a Chinese place and "Casa Blanca"(Translation=The white house) a Cuban restaurant

    it was kind of fun

We just had dinner with my grandma 2 Sundays ago in Oakland, across the street from the entrance of Fairyland. She is 95 but still pretty sharp. She used to cook us a ham with an amazing tasting mustard glaze on top. And a side dish, some sort of gelatin with nuts, carrots and fruit inside and fresh baked bread. She also went all out with Easter candy. Probably where I got my addiction to those chocolate covered marshmellow oval shaped egg things!

Every Sunday was pasta w/tomato sauce with my family; being Italian and all. Very little variation on that unless it was a holiday. If it was a holiday we might have lamb, veal, oven cooked chickens or chicken soup. On a few occasions Mom tried to make home made Pizza but I don't think she got it right. Sometimes she would make lasagna but I hate ricotta cheese so I would get some spaghetti on the side. Sometimes she would make some meatballs without cooking them in the tomato sauce. Just fried them up in a pan and let us eat them like an appetizer.

Mom passed away in 2002 and I still go over to eat with my Dad every Sunday. He likes to try and cook new things and we have have dinner. Mostly tho, he tells me how fat and stupid I am because he's angry Mom is gone. My brother lives with him but won't sit and eat with us now that he's grown up. He's an arrogant and disgruntled bastiche`. He only eats what he likes because it supposedly is part of his fitness regimen. He also has no use for family because he thinks we all screwed him over. He lives rent free. I'd like to know how we screwed him over.

Church then dinner at my aunt's house...every Sunday...growing up

          Church then dinner at a restaraunt...every Sunday...now

And in the South it's dinner (not lunch) and supper (not dinner). Just the lingo of the area.

It was always Church and then a quick lunch like grilled cheese, if we didn't eat out.

When I was growing up, Sundays started at church. From there we would typically hit a restaurant. It was usually King Fish or Blue Boar cafeteria. If we were in a hurry to get home, we might pick up White Castles instead. But typically it was a dine-in arrangement. Those were the times when we ate out. During the week and even on Saturdays it was normally a home cooked meal. So Sundays were unique for that reason.

Sundays we would eat at my Gram's house. We would have a huge meal and dessert. All the cousins would play or watch tv.

Back in the day Sunday suppers were occasionally a traditional Polish supper or something more American like meatloaf or a roast.

Today, it's usually a can of pork and beans or Nisson noodles

We also would go to church and usually out for Brunch afterwards. That also was our one time out to eat...usually Bob's Big Boy or something along those lines. My dad worked different shifts throughout the week and my mom would always try to have us eat together a couple of times a week (even if it was a late breakfast, an early dinner, etc.). We try to eat as a family a couple of times a week together but it has become increasingly difficult with the various activities going on. We still try...not always a success but I really do enjoy the times we can sit down together as a family and enjoy a meal together along with a little light banter.
