Clean off your desk.. everythings obsolete

Came across the article and found it interesting. The main thing being that everything will indeed be in the palm of your hand as far as technology goes. The world of Start Trek tech is upon us.

Interesting that dedicated cameras are considered a thing of the past. I would think ereaders would take off faster than losing a handheld camera would, but I'm old, what do I know?
    It's all good!

I believe they specified point-and-shoot cameras because they're not much better than what's available in phones now. I think digital SLR cameras are getting more and more popular.

I was in a meeting with some executives of the company and they were debating whether or not to make the Apple iPad an item to pay for and distribute to employees in addition to your desktop/laptop and for some people Blackberrys, iPhones, etc. The only real complaint I heard from our COO was that he didn't want to pay service fees for a smart phone and an iPad so he was basically saying one or the other. I am now seeing devices coming out where you would hook your phone up to your iPad type device and they would work with each other. I presume if the companies can figure out how to bundle the service fees, many companies will start converting to this.

When I was still in my corporate job the sales guys were getting HP tablets instead of laptops - and I think it would make sense if big companies started moving towards things like ipads for sales people. They're better for presentations to clients, and it's probably pretty easy to create order form programs for those things. Most the sales guys we had were computer illiterate beyond belief anyway - so they weren't really doing anything beyond what an ipad and smartphone could do now.

Interesting article. While phone cameras are reaching a point where they are comparable to many point and shoots, I really doubt they're going to take much of that market share. People still like to have a seperate camera. Many phones still limit a lot of what you can do with their cameras.

As long as somethings products are superior (point and shoot digital camera for instance vs. camera phone) I'll get them. For some the reasons mentioned in the article I need a desktop computer as long as I have website.

The desktop isn't going to be replaced by the laptop. They've been saying that for however many years now and desktops are still around.

I agree esp for traditional Brick and mortar operations. Most companies don't want the proprietary stuff going home at night. even if they allow some users to have laptops they don't make sense for everyone

It's interesting though. I always thought I'd only have a standard tower CPU, but now I just have an imac.

Screens are so compact now, as solid state drives get bigger I can see the standard CPU tower disappearing at some point - even if it's not replaced by what we think of as a laptop now.

I think for that very reason more companies are going to keep leaning towards adopting systems where files, operating systems and even applications are stored on and accessed by internal servers like intranet systems. There's going to be better controlled access to company files - more monitoring - less need to IT hundreds of computers.

So computers at some point maybe just a way to access that internal system - and won't actually have all the info and software currently stored on them.
