Unofficial Thrift Store Finds Thread, What You Got?

Since the other thread about thrift stores did so well and it seems like a lot of members hit the thrift stores, I figured a thread on just thrift stores finds would be cool.

Post what you like, doesn't have to be Mego.

I will start it off. For .50 cents today, I found this #1 Further Adventures of Indiana Jones, signed by Terry Austin and John Byrne

Our local Goodwill looks up anything collectible on Ebay and prices accordingly. I never seem to find anything good there but missed one big one a couple of months ago. Saw a really nice Saxophone with an asking price of $200. Since I work in the musical instrument business; I asked someone about it and was informed to write down the serial # and could figure out value from there. Went back the next day and it was gone. I said something to the person working in the store and he said, "Yeah, someone bought it and then told me it was worth $2,000"

Last time I went to my thrift store the only unusual thing they had was a huge box full of Bell Atlantic pens

I've never had any luck at thrift stores. The Goodwills around here are a complete waste of time. The prices on the used items are outrageous and they have very little of that. Most of the items they have are new, seems like more of a regular store than a thrift store.

Thrift stores can be a very fun experience and you never know you may luck out and find something cool and snag a great deal.

As some one else mentioned above Goodwill usually checks prices on line and then sends anything that is real good or remotely valuable to shopgoodwill.com I was actually told this by a Manager or two.

So if you ever think that your local Goodwill may not have something your looking for you may want to check on line and save a trip to the store.

I have seen Mego goodies come and go on that web site. I even bought "a few" myself. However, like everything in this world sooner or later everyone is going to find out and start bidding stupid prices on the site. And that they already have.

The above same holds true in my area as well. The day of the bargain and secret finds are getting numbered by the day. There are sooooo many other people doing the exact same thing. Monkey see Monkey do.

I see the same people over and over and they probably say and or think the same thing about me as well.

It blows me away some times to know that Goodwill purchases stuff by the pallet from Target (usually Target's return stuff) and then marks it up to and some cases even past what Target was actually selling it for.

The real kicker is that Goodwill usually gets the price they slap on it. I guess people think that they are "helping" out since GW started as a charity. ????

It seems like most items at GW here are starting at around $6.00 and the prices go up from there. With a heavy emphasis on the up part.

I never had luck with Good Will, But we have a local Thrift chain out here called Valley Thrift and I have done awesome there! Best find so far GI-Joe USS flag with the box for $5.99 sold the flag for $250 and the box for $300! I have found 4 24" shoguns ( a bit rough) and some of the smaller diecast. some Micronauts parts, some 12" joes and action man mixed in with the Barbies and even some Matt Mason stuff.

                That is INSANITY.

I cannot remember my best score. I've found tons and tons of loose 80s figures at a few (GI Joe, MOTU, Transformers, etc.). But it's here and there and they are of course always missing their accessories, so I hardly find it worth the time anymore.

But I'm in these places every weekend, even though I know they're a waste of time for the most part. Goodwill by me is way overpriced and most of these places do not sell loose toys anymore, out of fear of a choking lawsuit.

I heard some THROW toys out a lot. So I plan to do some dumpster diving behind these places soon.

I am sure really good stuff is filtered in the back though. I wanted to get a job at a local thrift store, just to be paid to get first dibs on the best stuff.

Not sure how popular these are around the country but besides Good Will and Salvation Army's we also have Catholic Mission stores in almost every big town.

They're good for clothes and sometimes furnature, but not much beyond that.

Goodwill Industries still is a charity here. They have a huge training center at which I have volunteered in the past.

My thrift pull today was this car club/hot rod jacket circa late 50s/early 60s for $5. For those not familiar with vintage clothes they are highly collectible--it's all about the chain stitched embroidery on the back. It's worth several hundred....

My story is old, but I have a few vintage Megos that I picked up several years ago for $1 each, one being Batgirl. Most recent is a Desoto Hemi with 2x4 intake which I paid $100 for. I know the last one makes no sence to anyone reading it on this board, but a Hemi is an engine valued at $1,000 alone and the 2x4 intake is valued at almost $1,000
