OK, this might be a dopey question for a MEGO site, but were the top five toys, (that were NOT Megos), that you really wanted for Xmas as a kid?
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
We were pretty poor so I never asked for much. One year we got a big group present, a nentendo. All 5 of us got a lot of enjoyment out of it. Can't really think of much more that I got. I was always thankful that we were all healthy and together.
1. Charlie McCarthy Doll (begged my mother for one so I could "throw" my voice "santa" wound up giving me the 30" version).
2. Robot (without fail a robot was on my Xmas list every year).
3. Atari (Missil Command Baby!!!)
4. Batman and Robin Exploding Bridge
5. Electric Guitar
1. Evel Knievel Stunt Bike and van
2. Action Man with home made sentry box by my Dad
3. Space Ranger Action man with extra blood painted on by my Dad
4. Dr. Who and Tardis (not quite Mego)
5. Hulk and Fantastic Four Marvel Treasury Editions

Wow, I got so many great Xmas presents, trying to pick the top 5 most wanted ones is tough.....off the top of my head, here goes...
1. Star Wars "exclusive" playsets- Starting with the Sears exclusive Cantina playset (with Blue Snaggletooth), I looked forward to hopefully getting the catalog exclusive playsets every Xmas from my grandparents, who pretty much ordered all my presents from Sears, JcPenney, Service Merchandise, etc....I thought it was so cool to get those playsets especially since they came with action figures included! The cantina set, the Hoth Command set, the Bespin set, etc.
2. Shogun Warriors- I was pretty young when these first hit the shelves here, but I wanted them badly right away. I only ever got Raydeen and Godzilla, but luckily met some kindergarten friends who had Mazinga, Dragun, etc. Even when I got a bit older and went through my "too cool for toys" phase in my teens, I always thought Shogun Warriors were pretty cool.
3. Evel Kneivel bike & figure set- I had an uncle who I favored when I was really young, and he was a biker, so I insisted that he be the one to get me the Evel Kneivel set since he "knew" about motorcycles, LOL. And he did get it for me. I remember that toy being my number 1 most anticipated present that Xmas. I played with it for a long time after that, too.
4. Fisher Price Castle playset- When I was around 5 or 6 I started to become very infatuated with knights and dragons and that sort of thing, so I was pretty taken with this playset. Though I was starting to get a bit old for Little People, the Castle itself was just so cool with its trap doors and hidden rooms and it seemed huge to a lil' guy like myself. I think that was my favorite present that Xmas.
5. Electric guitar- I wanted a guitar for many years, due to my infatuation with Kiss and Cheap Trick and Journey, etc....once I started taking guitar lessons at age 9 with my crummy little acoustic guitar, my grandmother surprised me that Xmas with a red Gibson SG copy from Sears. I finally got a cool electric guitar and best part was I could actually play it (well, kinda, lol). Seeing as I play guitar for a living now, I guess it was probably the most important Xmas gift I ever got as well!
I know this is supposed to be gifts "other than Megos", but I have to say that my most desired Xmas gift as a kid was the Ace Frehley Mego figure. I asked for him for every Xmas, every birthday, etc., from 1978 on....having no idea that toys were not in fact manufactured endlessly, haha, I presumed that eventually my mom (or Santa!) would locate Ace for me. I don't think I finally gave up until like 1983 or so! I didn't finally procure an Ace until some kid traded his to me when I was in 8th grade. Even now, my mom still remembers how I badgered her every Xmas for an Ace doll, and how she searched everywhere for that darned thing, LOL.
Kenner Millenium Falcon
BMX bike
Football outfit (LA Rams Helmet from Sears w/shoulder pads and shirt)
Caleco-vision game system
Electronic Football (the vibrating field with the little guys on green stands._
The Falcon was the one thing I never got--They were sold out after Christmas.
1 batman mego
2 superman mego
3 hall of justice mego
4 batcave mego
5 train set.
gotthe mego stuff never got the trains but my brother did . so i got to play with them anyway.
That was a great game console when it first came out, better than either Atari or Intellivision...but I was in my 20s by then, so I bought that one myself.
