OK, Let's See Some Sports Collections!!!!

I don't think we have done this in awhile.

    Let's see some Holy Grails!!!

I will start off with a new Holy Grail I picked up today. It is a letterman jacket. There is a name in it, B Jones. I am hoping it is Bert Jones, but it maybe his brother Ben Jones, who played at the same time. If you don't know, Bert Jones is probably one of the top 5 players ever to come out of LSU

Sorry...I'm not really a sports collector per say.

I'm a boxing fanatic...but never really collected boxing memorabilia either...except I had the Mego Muhammad Ali ring set with both figures...but I have since sold it.

Having said that...I did own something really cool about 20 years ago...it was an authentic signed Joe Montana autographed football...but again...I also sold that long ago.

I like sports...but never really had the need to collect sports memorabilia.

I do own sports wear though...a Raider jersey, Raider & 49er jackets, an A's & Giants pair of windbreakers, a Warriors fleece pullover, a Mexican National team soccer jersey...and probably my favorite piece of sports clothing...an authentic/official personalized Aston Villa home short-sleeved soccer jersey given to me by a friend from England...

I also owned this...but I gave it to a close friend who happens to be both a huge boxing and Rocky fan...

I have a bunch of Chicago Bears and Bulls stuff including an autographed #99 Dan Hampton jersey and a picture of him with my ex while she was pregnant with my son (who is now 15). Dan is one of my favorite Bears player ever. Also have other autographs including Walter Payton's on a Bulls game ticket stub. A friend had a broken leg and we were seated in the front row. Walter was right behind us and was kind enough (as always) to sign my stub. I also have MJ's autograph and tons of sports cards including many rookie cards.

He always seemed like a classy guy. It's a shame he was taken from us so young.

Well, it was good while it lasted. I contacted LSU about the jacket and they forwarded my info to Bert Jones.

My phone rings this afternoon, a number I don't recognize. The man says he is Bert Jones. I thought it was a prank call until he said the lady at LSU gave him my number.

Turns out, the jacket was not stolen. He thinks his wife gave it away accidentally while cleaning out the closet. He asked what I paid for it, and really liked to buy it back for what I paid for it ($250).

He said this was not the first time his wife did something like this. One year, LSU did not give out letterman jackets, they gave out letterman blankets. He found his outside, in the dog pen. His wife gave it to the dog to sleep over.

This was going to be one top pieces of my collection. It is like finding a carded RM Robin, and then finding out it was stolen.

Here aim returning the letterman jacket to Bert Jones a couple hours ago. He was cool and grateful. I just realized it looks like he is flipping me off

While you may not have the jacket anymore you do have a pretty cool story to tell.

That was pretty nice of you. I don't know if I would have even thought of calling the school to see if the original owner wanted an old item back (not that I even have anything of that caliber). It doesn't even sound like it was stolen if I got the story straight, just something his wife did by mistake.

As a side note, I have a really good Washington Redskins pennant collection. I intend on displaying them in my mancave at some point in the future. I also have a few old Redskins items including a 1934 Redskins program vs the Bears (they were the Boston Redskins at the time), an original song sheet of Hail to the Redskins (lyrics by Corinne Griffith who was George Preston Marshall's wife (first owner of the Redskins). The original lyrics have a few lines in it that were changed because they are a bit un-p.c.) I have a really neat Redskins mini megaphone that looks like was handed out as a souvenir to a game or maybe an inexpensive stadium item (looks like it is from the 1940's or 50's), and a pretty decent pinback collection including a couple of pinbacks when they were the Boston Redskins (The Boston Redskins stuff is super hard to find since they were only there for 4 years....well 5 if you include the first year when they were called the Boston Braves) until they moved to Washington.
