Just saw a report that saw small traces of radiation from Japan have reached the west coast. Finally, a good reason to live in New Jersey. Really goes to illustrate how small this planet is and how inter-twind we humans all are to each other. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and mother nature is ****ed. Time for humans to get along!

It was just the other day that "they" said that there is no concern of the radiation reaching the West Coast. Yeah right! I knew that was B.S. right from the start. It is in the air. Where else is it supposed to go?? Sooner or later it will probably reach us all, but in lesser quantity as the air caries it.Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

We need to make sure that nuclear reactors in the USA are up to snuff and that we have all of our earthquake gear ready to roll in Cali.
Meanwhile, send small donations to Japanese Red Cross and hope for the best to come from the worst over there.Comment

The nuclear regulatory commission has been BS ing the country for years on this "Safe" alternative energy. We have just been stashing the waste out of the way and hoping someday they will develop the technology to deal with it. Stupid and short sighted.
Earthquakes are the least of your problems. Eventually the stock piles of waste will become a serious issue in themselves.
Hopefully even the slow people in this country will finally get the picture. It takes up to 10 Years of keeping waste rods cool JUST to get them cool enough to even move. Even then they are lethal for 1000s of years.
And just this country alone between our civil reactors and military produce tons of waste a year.Last edited by Doc; Mar 18, '11, 7:25 PM.Comment

There has NEVER been a safe way to neutralize radioactive waste. There has NEVER been a man made structure that has stood long enough to demonstrate we could even build a safe containment facility. ( I live near the failed West vally nuclear project in NY)

1) My brother in law is a computational fluid dynamics engineer, who switched to land-based turbine work from aerospace a few years ago because he didn't want to leave his beach houseSo he works in power generation and of course one of his German parent company's standing practices is to have energy independence plans ready to roll in the off chance that the US would pull the trigger on infrastructure spending, so that they could competitively bid and be ready to work.
The current professional estimation is that the US could, through a combination of hydro, wind, and solar, be completely independent of foreign energy requirements within ten years using only existing technology (no research, no breakthroughs, just scaling-up). The cost was estimated (spread out over ten years) to total about 1/4th (that should have read 1/2) of one year's military spending.
2) And this is beyond completely horrible -
Because he understands energy in a way I never will, he was reading the reports on one of the efforts to build radiation shielding for a plant in Japan, and his quote was, "Oh... oh that's... that's bad. All of those workers are going to be dead in a year."
His estimation is they'll have to sacrifice 100 to 200 people to get it done, because there's nothing that can adequately shield the human body from what they need to do. The question just becomes whether they're going to explain that to them first or not.
I'd usually take something like that with a lot of skepticism, but this is the guy who told my sister to turn off the live coverage of the Challenger launch before it left the pad because he heard what the technical issue was and said, "I'm not interested in watching it when it explodes..."
...I might add he'd watched every other single shuttle launch live until that one.Last edited by Tothiro; Mar 18, '11, 7:20 PM.Comment
