                          I know it sounds crazy that they would bring beer with them but beer and wine were the drink of the day...it's all over the bible.

                          The water was not purified and a lot of the drinking water was full of parasites and all kinds of nasty things.

                          There was also a general belief that beer and wine was better for your health than drinking water....but then again, they thought tobacco had certain medicinal qualities as well.
