Looking at old TV Guides and a Honeymooners oddity

That I got from Ebay. They are from 1974-76.

It's a hoot, of course. But what sticks out to me is how many of the shows being listed in those pages are at my fingertips whenever I want through my DVD collecting.

Star Trek, Space:1999, The Twilight Zone, Gilligan's Island and all the other usual suspects.

Another thing that struck me funny is that they had a listing for The Honeymooners.

The episode being described was "The Sleepwalker" which was about Norton having a sleepwalking problem.

Because I am a Honeymooners fan, I know that this episode was radically rewritten.

It was supposed to take place on a Business trip Ralph was sent to by the bus company.

Jackie Gleason was always reluctant to do shows out of the confines of the apartment set. So, he got the writers to totally write out Ralph's business trip.

Norton's sleepwalking problem takes place in Ralph and Norton's apartment building in the show that was filmed and aired.

Well, when Honeymooners was being run on TVLand and I could see episode descriptions on the digital cable guide I looked at the description for "The Sleepwalker". The description had Norton having the problem on Ralph's business trip.

I was somewhat mystified that the 200? description of the episode was based on a version of the script that was never filmed.

Now, the old mid 70's TV Guide has the same mistake in their description of "The Sleepwalker". I'll bet they were the original source for the eventual mistake description on the digital cable guide.

So, it's amazing no one's corrected the description in TV Guide after (then) 20 years and then later on, the mistake gets carried into the 21'st century digital cable guide that probably used TV Guide descriptions for their listings.

They're a blast to flip through. About two years ago I grabbed a lot of all the Fall Preview guides covering the 70's.

I have a 1977 Tv guide sitting on a table in my office. Aside from the then-lovely Valerie Bertinelli on the cover, there is a headline saying "How ABC went from No. 3 to No. 1." (I work at ABC)

That Honeymooners catch is fascinating. I wonder if the episode was originally described that way back when the show first came out.
