Management is atrocious...USPS goes by the buddy-buddy system...it's all about who you know...nothing to do with qualifications...vast numbers of supervisors are completely inept at what they do...many barely graduated from high school....and can barely write a work schedule sheet.

That sucks! I think a lot of companies are using that as a loop whole these days to get out of paying benefits.

I think there should be a law created to protect the workers against this kind of scam.

The definition of part time should really be addressed. Part time to me should not be allowed to consist of a worker to be at the same place for two years. That is more like full time by my definition.

Just their way of hyping the public to get support for their next increase of another $0.02 per first class stamp!

        Cut out Saturday delivery.
Reduce the Pension promises for new employees.
Raise the cost of Bulk/Junk mail!

That is indeed sad. That is definitely not setting a good example for others to follow.

I can remember one instance that happened to me while I was dropping off packages. A Sup was working the clerks job (for some reason) and he was totally clue less as to what he was doing. And it showed!

Then the guy how the audacity to try and cop an attitude with me over his own stupidity. Wrong answer! Needless to say I told him how I really felt about his attitude.

Agreed! Or in this case maybe "A greed". Just like everything else these days charge more get less. This seems to be the trend most every where these days. And the sad part about it is it actually works. The public buys it hook, line and sinker.

By comparison I worked as a temp for the NYC High School Board of Ed or 2 years and then had to get out before I murdered somebody. After 2 years being harassed by some of the employees because I did my work all I thought about was who I was going to kill first. I bet the P.O. is in the same state of disarray: work slow-downs, laziness, infighting, face to face confrontations, yelling, screaming, threats, abuses of power, people overlooked for promotion, etc. I'm sure the P.O. has all these problems and more.

People who should have moved up at the BOE had been kept down in my county. The previous Manager in High Schools didn't bother with merit raises, bonuses, etc. Most likely it was because she was too lazy to do the paperwork. When the new guy came in, during my time there, his jaw hit the floor after hearing this! His predecessors made it a rule not to bother with these simple but important raises. There were people who had worked at BOE since the 1970's who knew their job and their bosses jobs and could do them effortlessly but were only making 40 thou. a year by 1998-pitiful. To compare: before my job was outsourced by JJKenny/S/P, I started in 2000 making 28 thou. and was let go in 2009 making 45 thou.

People who got the top jobs there were previously teachers and went from making 60-70 thou to making 90-100 thou. There was a certain arrogance among some of the top people. They delegated everything they were suppossed to do to their employees; who were better at the job than the Admin's were.

When someone retired the employee was not promoted. Some people got jobs due to nepotism. Others were blocked on purpose because they didn't kiss their bosses azzes enough. The guy who ran the whole Queens H.S. System was a former English teacher. Never did I hear any policy proposed that helped clean up the mess in the NY Ed system; at least in our burrough. He gave a lot of speeches, hosted luncheons, and collected top pay. The P.O. probably has similar blockage and dead wood.

my local post office is bad too. there can be a line out the door and only one clerk on the desk while you see the otehrs walking around in the back, sorting mail or whatever it is they do. My wife actually complained to them about it and was told they never leave the desk with only 1 clerk when there are more than 3 people in line. what a bunch of crap, everytime I go in there there are at least 5-6 people waiting and only 1 clerk
I think the post office is like many other long established businesses, stagnant. keeping things the same with no incentive for improvement.
they should privitize it....in the long run I am sure it would be better for the economy too.

I have to give my little hometown post office a big thumbs up.

We have 2 woman that work in the PO (one is the post master) ... the third person is a man mail carrier.

They know just about everybody in the town by name

Because we're in a scenic and historic area (along the Appalachian Trail) most of the post office's business is hikers sending postcards.

No post office is more "Mayberry" than mine and I like it that way

Even though all new hires are casuals, the vast majority of USPS employees are long-time, unionized fill-timers,...and the money rolling out to them is staggering! I come from a postal family. My paternal grandfather and three aunts retired from the USPS. I currently have two aunts and more cousins than I count employed as carriers. I know my one aunt makes $23.00 an hour REGULAR pay. Overtime is double and holidays are triple. This last six months, she signed up to be on the approved overtime list. However, with low mail volumes, her office was unable to give anyone overtime hours. As a result of postal union negotiations, she still receives ten hours of overtime pay a week, even though she doesn't work the hours. Lets do the quick math,...23 x 2 = 46 x 10 = $460 a week extra just for NOT working overtime. Hmmmm,...

I worked as a casual during college and quit after I graduated. I should have stayed. I could have had my twenty years in and been retired with a pension already.

                            Amen.

I use USPS for all my shipping needs - it is often cheaper and ALWAYS more convenient.

When I get home and see a UPS note on my door. I know it will be a hassle to get my package.

When I need to return a product using a companies return mailer at UPS I have to drive 4 miles each way as opposed to USPS that is across the street from my grocery store half a mile from my house. Saturday?

USPS has had financial troubles forever. I doubt it will ever close. Constitutionally we are guaranteed a postal service and since there is no other carrier of regular mail the govt. will be required to make it work or provide another service.

I use USPS because the other companies don't have offices in the boonies ... and i'm not driving 35+ miles to mail a package.

.....and those other companies don't have offices in the boonies because it is not profitable. In many ways the USPS provides a public service rather than a profit making business. It is a sorta apples and oranges comparison 'tween the USPS and the other guys......
