What musical instrument makes this sound ?

I hear this sound in many 60's and early 70's TV shows and movies.

Mostly it's played when people are creeping around.

I always wondered what makes this sound ... a musical instrument ?

    An example .....

It's a percussion instrument (b/c you hit it), but I don't know what it's called. That sound is the vibration caused after you hit it. (I think)

You talking about the rattle snake sound? Could be a few percussion instruments I think. My first guess would be some kind of noisemaker that swings on a stick - like this dealy-o:

That makes a similar sound, but I don't think that's it.

Disclaimer: I think I saw this instrument on TV once, but I can't for the life of me remember how it looks. I may be wrong about the percussion thing. (But I don't think so).

Yes, it's the Vibraslap. I used to play percussion as a teenager. When you smack the wooden ball on the palm of your hand, the other part vibrates making a rattle snake type sound.
