Saturday night TV in the 70s

I'm sitting watching the TVLand Icons special, and they've done Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett, and I can't help but miss some of the best TV ever: Saturday nights on CBS. I plant my tush in front of the TV at 8 and wouldn't leave until 11. And I gotta say my fave was Carol Burnett. I wish someone would put the hour long version back on TV.

Any other memories from you 70s babies?

    You betcha', Hardy Girl!

I absolutely remember bathwater running while the closing theme to "The Carol Burnett Show" was playing.

As soon as that cartoon Carol disappeared, my little behind had to run for the tub and after that, bedtime.

I had to take my bath before Saturday primetime started. Sometimes when my mom would wash my hair (a major undertaking b/c I'm black), she'd blowdry it during the Carol Burnett show.

When the show first began, I would BEG to stay up and watch. My bedtime on Friday and Saturday was 10pm. For about 2 months, my mom would say, "You better be able to get up for Sunday School." Since I never had a problem, the warnings ceased and she would stay up and watch w/ me. I was always sad when she sang her last song, b/c that meant I had to wait a whole week, (remember when we had to actually do that?), to watch another one.

I never, ever, ever missed The Carol Burnette Show. Carol Burnette and the Lone Ranger are two of my favorite childhood tv memories.

WKBW in Buffalo played that right before the Eye Witness News.

Yep, Sat, night meant fantasy Island and Love Boat. I can't remember what always came on before those at 8:00. I can even remember when the Love Boat was just a special show that would come on occasionally until it made it as a regular series. Sunday night for me ws The Wonderful World of Disnay, The Hardy Boys/ Nancy Drew and Chips if I remeber correctly.

Man, you guys have hit a chord with me, sat mornings and nights in the 70's hold a special place in my heart.
I came from a very screwed up family, and my only saving grace was I spent every weekend and all summers with my grandparents. sat mornning I was up at the crack of dawn, eating my cereal watching bugs bunny, hong kong fewie, and multiple others until around 10 am, then kung fu theatre came on (anyone remember the 7 deadly animal forms?) then at 11 sci/fi horror theatre came on, usually showed a vincent price movie, or "poe picture" as they used to call em, or a end of the world, flying saucer movie. I then spent the rest of the day going around with my grandmother picking up her "kids" for special olymics. then after that we would boogie home and she would cook me something awesome, then we would watch love boat, and fantasy Island before crashing!! as I got older she was the first to let me stay up and watch saturday night live. Then on sunday morning it was up to watch Houston wrestleing!! I had a really, really kewl grandmother.

What ever happened to sat morning cartoons? Man the kids today dont know what they are missing... I couldnt wait for the "fall preview" of TV guide to come out so I could see what new sat shows were coming on!!

                          Thanks for the memories guys!!

I too spent the weekends with my grandparents. I was born in '74, so I vaguely remember watching "Emergency!" on Saturday evenings. What I do remember on Saturday night TV is (starting with the early evening) Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, Hee Haw, Lawrence Welk, CHiPs, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island and the late news. I would go to sleep by the time Saturday Night Live was really in full swing. Though I do, fully, remember the whole "Buckwheat has been shot" 'thing'...lol

                            Great times!!! :D
