    Happy Birthday Oklahoma!

Today is the Centennial Celebration marking our entrance into the Union.

As a State Employee, I've got the day off so I'm watching the re-enactment of the Statehood Proclamation on Television.

The original Capitol of Oklahoma was Guthrie and in 1910 the Capitol was moved to Oklahoma City.
The happy result of Guthrie's misfortune is that Guthrie is a perfectly preserved Victorian city. While growth and poor urban planning caused other Oklahoma towns such as Oklahoma City to destroy much of their early downtown architecture, much of the entire central business and residential district of Guthrie is totally intact.
Guthrie, Oklahoma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This makes quite a scene for the celebration. There are people dressed as they were in Territorial days gathered in front of buildings that have been preserved as they looked one-hundred years ago. Kind of like stepping back in time.

Tonight there is a celebration concert in Oklahoma City and if you are a Country Music fan, check out this line-up: Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Carrie Underwood (all native Oklahomans).

Thanks for pointing that out to everyone here.... unfortunately, I'm spending Oklahoma's centennial in Texas, land of the barbarians!

      Happy Statehood Day, JamesD!

Well, being in Texas, it shouldn't be too hard to celebrate with a good ole' chicken-fried steak dinner!

It should be easy to find on the menu anywhere down that way.

If the board would be so kind as to indulge me, I would like to post a partial list of famous Oklahomans.
In no way am I implying that any other State of the Union has not given us impressive people, but I am feeling especially proud that my little State has produced our fair share.

        Will Rogers (my favorite)
Daniel Hale Rowan (of Rowan and Martin)
William Boyd (actor), better known as "Hopalong Cassidy"
        Lon Chaney Jr
        Joan Crawford
        Blake Edwards
        James Garner
        Van Heflin
        Ron Howard
        Ben Johnson
        Rue McClanahan
        Megan Mullally
Leona Mitchell (and her weirdo brother, Yahweh ben Yahweh)

        Brad Pitt
        Tony Randall
        James Marsden
        Garth Brooks

Teach, you know we love our Texas neighbors!

(Besides, I am a native Texan, so you will never hear a "discouraging word" about Texas from me. Well, maybe when OU plays Texas, but then someone always points out the fact that I was born in Texas and then I have to shut up. My own sister won't even give me a break on that point.)

I'm every bit as proud of my Texas roots and gladly claim to be a Texan, as well.

              John:

You know I love Texas! I was born at Parkland hospital in Dallas (where JFK died), so I'm a barbarian by birth. I'm at TX A&M in Commerce, about an hour east of Dallas, right now for a theatre festival. I've been to Amarillo back in October, and I'm coming back to Huntsville in February. By the way, Bette and I are thinking of a spring break getaway on the Heartland Flyer to chill in Ft. Worth/Dallas, and we will probably do our Galveston trip with the kids this summer.... I don't know what I'd do without Texas! As much as I love OK, TX really is the place to go for fun.

Hope all is well for you and your family down there in the Houston area!

well, from another Texan, Happy Birthday oakies!! I cant say anything bad about Oklahoma eaither, have several good friends, and a bunch of ex inlaws (which I got along better with than the ex wife :0) from there. Some of the best buffalo burgers I have ever had was in oklahoma!! On the Phillip 66 Ranch I believe it was. It was the *hunting lodge* of the guy that owned phillips 66, man that guy had a hell of a gun collection!!
