I've heard it's suppose to keep stuff out of your ear. Like if a bug flies in your ear,it's suppose to trap it and will eventually push it out of your ear. Sounds kind of stupid when you think about it. That bug sitting in your ear going nowhere until your ear wax pushes it out.
actually one of the reasons it is there is because the smell is so bad (have you tried smelling it?) that it stops things like bugs from going in there. It is meant to trap dirt and small insects too and yes push them out, another reason is to stop water from going into your ear drum when you go under water.
By most standard definitions of wax (Any of various natural, oily or greasy heat-sensitive substances, consisting of hydrocarbons or esters of fatty acids that are insoluble in water but soluble in nonpolar organic solvents.), the answer is Yes.
The medical term for earwax is Cerumen, from the latin word Cera, meaning wax.
