Do you consider it taboo to buy other toy lines?

    Hello everyone,

I was just wondering on what everyone's thoughts were on collecting toy lines other than Mego. At the moment I only collect Mego and vintage Star Wars, but I have been thinking of expanding my empire of toys. For example I would like to start buying Mattel Big Jim, Empire vehicles and AHI Monsters. Should I just stick to Mego or what? I don't want to venture too far out of the Mego realm and regret it later, especially if I run out of room and need to sell stuff to fit more Mego in.
What does everyone else think, should a true Mego-ite just stick strictly to Mego or not?

Ah, heck no. My toy interests are all over the place. Variety is fun! Besides there are a lot of different characters and subjects Mego never made.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Collect what you want, realizing that the more variety of lines you collect, the less attention (and money) you will be able to spend on any one of them. For some people, it is recollecting various things from their childhood, for others it is concentrating on a more specific focus, like Mego, or more likely, specific Mego lines.

Personally I try to collect 8 inch Mego scale figures, with Mego, Customs and Repro/Retro figures all gathering dust on my shelves!

I have collected everything from Mego's to GI Joes to Big Jims to Lunch Boxes to anything Star Trek, Irwin Allen and Gerry Anderson related ---- to Beatles and other rock and roll items to ....... (I guess I should stop) --- but you get the idea

Like Spock once said ---- Mego's are only the beginning of collecting, not the end.

Oh, I have Mego, Big Jim, GIJoe, and lots of other dolls, girl's stuff too. I'm not a purist when it comes to toys, (except I prefer 70s stuff).

Collect what you want. Its for your enjoyment. If I had the space I'd probably venture into the classic GI Joe myself.

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?

Collect what you like, and you can't go wrong. But I'll admit that my collection suffers from a lack of strong focus. I can't help it, I just like too many different toylines. If I had focused my time and money just on Mego, I would have probably met one of my goals by now: all of the WGSH in boxes. But on the other hand, I also like the variety in my collection (and in others' collections). At any rate, as long as you don't pay silly prices, you can always sell of parts of your collection to fund other pieces, if your focus or interests change a bit.

On one hand---sure go collect what you want---obviously its not a sin---
and you've heard enough of that already on this thread

But allow me to share that I've found that the farther you stray outta your core passions
for collecting---the more possible it is for you to make "impulse buys" and have "buyers'
                  remorse"

If you're okay with running the risk of potential "damge control" (i.e. selling off things you
bought but didn't really want for the "long haul") then take some risks
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

Like others have stated, I say collect what you like. I collect all kinds of toys.

I basically have a 70's emphasis with Mego at it's core. I like putting certain parameters on my collecting or otherwise I'll go crazy. For instance I collect AT/Fuzzhead GI Joes. I'm not interested in 60's painted heads. I do collect Star Wars, but only toys from the first movie. I have no desire to own anything Return Of The Jedi related etc. etc. I also have no room for modern toy lines, reproductions, customs or any such crud.

But ultimately it's really up to you as a collector to figure out what you really like.

Have fun and collect anything you want or that interests you. I collect most anything superhero related from the 70's, 70's action figures, comics, any toys I had as a kid and drinking glasses. At one time or another I've always collected something.

lol, modern toy lines, reproduction, customs or any such crud. That is EXACTLY my feelings! Thanks for the advice guys, I will be making my toy focus bigger once more with AHI, Remco and Mattel junk. Long live the 70's!

Wow guys (Ninja and megoat)---if I didn't know any better---it sounds like you
are insulting people who don't collect how you collect----

That's funny---I spend hundereds of dollars a year on customs and I don't think they
are "crud" at all----in fact they make up the biggest part of my collection

And remember what I said Ninja---think before you leap---lashing out and buying
something just because its "70s" could potentially lead to second thoughts and the
hassle of resale down the line

Huedell, sorry if it sounded like I was 'bashing' people who collect customs, but in my eye's I can't see the value in some thing that is not original. I think custom's are awesome because there are some things that no toy company made so it is up to the customizers to do it, in terms of spending money and storage room though, I would rather get some thing original.
                              each to there own right?
And don't worry about impulse buying, I have learnt my lesson so many times I don't think I will just buy thing's because they are 70's, I want to focus on specific lines of toys and I want to do plenty of research on subject before I start spending all of my toy money on them.
                              thanks for the advice
