    Fort Lauderdale / Miami

It's been nearly 4 years since my last real vacation - ever since I was laid off my corporate job, basically - so we're taking off to Florida tomorrow. I can't wait!

I've been a bunch of times before, but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend anything fun and nerdy for me to do there that I might not know about.

    Please let me know!

    On the to do list:
Comic shops, record stores, flea markets and collectable junk, microbreweries and other little cool places.

on the NOT to do list:
Clubs, outdoor activities that require me to do anything but smoke a cigar and lie down. I'm not exactly an outdoor adventurer.

in Ft.Laudedale i haven't been in a while but there's always the swap shop flea market which is open 7 days a wee and has a bunch of stuff for kids(circus,Drive in movies) stuff like that and that's close to Saw Grass mills mall which is the biggest mall in Florida

in Miami i could tell you my 2 local comic shops but none are really that good to waste vacation time, one in next to like 4 antique shops

how familiar are you with Miami? do you know the Hialeah area? it's close to the Miami international airport ,Cause you could go to where I go to hunt for toys, it's a shopping center with like 5 thrift shops

and if you wanna have fun and gamble there's the Seminole hard rock

Hey man! I remembered you were in Florida, but I forgot you were in Miami!

Yeah - the swap shop is on our list for sure, I love that place! Sawgrass Mall too - especially if it rains one day.

I don't know the Hialeah area, but decent thrift shops sound great. We'd check that out for sure! What's it called?

We're probably hitting up Hard Rock one night - we went last time and my fiancee likes gambling

We're probably going to hit up Dania Jai-Alai too, because that's always crazy and fun, especially after Jaxson's ice cream.

Comic Shops to hit in the Lauderdale area:

Super Comics, run by a buddy of mine, and Tate's Comics.

In Miami, you can try A&M, but Jorge the guy who runs it is an acquired taste. He can be a real jerkwad unless you're planning on blowing a ton of cash. His store is a crappy hole in the wall but he's got good stuff buried if you're willing to look. NOT a place to bring the wife and kids. Think Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.

As for tourist stuff, there's the Seaquarium, which costs about the same as Seaworld but a quarter as good.

There's Parrot Jungle, MetroZoo... all outdoors, but at this time of year it's better than summer!

I'm a fan of the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens on US1 and the Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium.

Hit up Bayside at night and take a quick "party boat" tour of the causeway. It's like a night club on the water than lasts for maybe an hour, BUT you can sit outside the music area and just enjoy the short cruise around the bay without having to deal with the "party" atmosphere. Kids are welcomed too on many of them. Just walk around Bayside's boat landings and find a partyboat to your liking.

If you like gambling, the Hard Rock's good to go.

              Flamingo Plaza - Hialeah, FL

sometimes they think they know about collectibles and try and over charge but you can usually find sweet deals....I've found anything from Megos,Joes,Vintage Barbies, etc. you name it, I've found it there...In fact I was there 2 weeks ago and scored 5 American girl dolls for $20 , they sell for $60-$100+ each

and i found 50 loose joes for $10 , the best store is the big one with the mirror windows , they have a huge toy selection

I used to hit that up every so often when I still lived down there. Good stuff.

Once found a mag of 5 Naked megos (starsky & hutch, bo & luke, waltons) for a $1.99.

Is Tate's Comics a store on, er, I want to say University? I have to get there and find my bearings again. That name seem kind of familiar to me. I'm sure I've been.

Okay - I'm probably not going to be online again tomorrow night, but I'm for sure going to make a list of this stuff when I get there.

This is great guys - thank you so much!

                            Thanks again toys2cool and LadyZod!

Our vacation was amazing. We didn't get to do everything we wanted to - partially because we were having such a great time that my fiancee and I decided to elope while we were there. We got married in Broward County city hall - and basically just basked in our happiness while loafing around the pool the rest of the trip.

We did get to Swap Shop and Sawgrass a couple of times, I got some cool records at this place on University called CD Haven (or Heaven, I think).

Hopefully next time we come in we'll be able to give a little more warning - It would be awesome to try to meet up with you guys! Cheers!
