    Dvd+rs Stopped Working ????

Iv recorded 100s over the years , on my DVD AND VIDEO RECORDER COMBO and had amazing results but sometimes when I play them back like some years later there's errors on the DISCS , like when I play them they may stick stop for a moment then carry on , and I know that when originally made they played perfect , I am fanatical (some may say retarded ) when it comes to looking after my stuff I like to keep it good...

One odd thing Iv found out see if I have a DVD+R and it has the sticking problems or wont play I find exporting it to my pc and re burning removes the errors ? amazing or what ...whats going on though ....

    anyone have this problem ?

It's quite common on burned media and I know some people on here disagree. But it's a very common problem. Grant it if you take into account the media type(low quality cheap brands don't last long) or archive methods and environment(Yes, temperature and climate conditions are a factor) must be take into account. Also playback lens get degraded or some players will not read burned media.
But it's easy to remove the data on a disc and reburn to play back fine. I've done this with my live bootlegs recordings but some media was so poor that I lost my recordings which I never backed up.

I find that Verbatim Discs are the best when it comes to DVD +R. Never had a problem yet with them. Memorex are the worst...they ALWAYS have sector errors. If you can get them I'd suggest using Verbatim. Also, when burning discs don't over do it with the speed you are burning them at. Faster time doesn't give you the best quality...in fact that's when problems start like skipping or just plain old stopping while you are watching the DVD back again. Same is true for recording records to CD...if you should have 45's that you are burning, record them at 33 1/3 speed and let the program you are using adjust the speed to 45 speed....it will give you better quality and better range in your recording. Hope that helps.

I've had the same problems when I first started burning years ago because of trying different brand blanks.

I've settled with and am very happy with Sony -r ...

For me Sony -r burns fine and seems to have a long burned shelf-life

At the opposite end, i've found Staples, Memorex and TDK among the worst... Even if the burn looks and plays fine they have errors and can't be reburned --- horrible for archiving

HP is "ok" but I wouldn't rely on them for anything important.

        It's Sony for me

The first course of action is to try a lens cleaner disc. I did when a DVD player had trouble booting up DVD-R's and even some store bought DVD's and it cleared it right up.

Burned DVD's digital info is not as cleanly laid on the disc as a pressed one so if the lens has dirt on it they will be the first ones not able to be read.

So the sticking problems might be as simple as a lens starting to get too dirty to read the more imprecise burned DVD info.

Mike, you know that DVD + R should be your final end product with video etc. Right?

              I didn't think there was a difference.

              I usually burn -r

              Is +r better ?

From what I understand +R is what you should end up with because it lasts longer and I think it is also more compatible with machines. I usually bounce whatever is on my DVR to DVD -R and then bring it into my computer and use NeroSmart DVD burning program and convert to DVD+R with menu's.

I'll have to think about that.

The only reason I use -r because I was lead to believe they play on all machines and +r was a hit and miss (depending on the player)

I use +R all the time, and they work real good. Someone said they're "more of a European thing," but I don't know what that means. I think it has to do with why they sometimes play finicky in cheaper region 1 machines.

Same here. +R's have given me MUCH more grief than -R's.
