To me, she was the movie.

I love that the Coen's distinguished this movie from the John Wayne version by making Mattie the point of view character. That is closer to the Portis novel which left you thinking that maybe Mattie had the "true grit" that she so often espoused and Rooster (and everyone around her, for that matter, be they good, bad or indifferent) had to step up their game because of her tenacity.

By the way, was that J.K. Simmons (the dude that awesomely played J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man flicks) as the voice of Lawyer Noble Daggett? It is an uncredited role, but I'd swear it was him (and the Coen's tend to work with the same actors on multiple projects).

I'd put money on her winning for sure. She's got TONS of media attention and all the youngest Oscar winners are from the "best supporting actress" category - they LOVE doing that. Plus "True Grit" is probably going to be shut out of most other categories - so they'll want to award it something.

True Grit may be shut out, but that is the nature of a remake....especially a remake of an iconic movie like the John Wayne version.

If she were to win the award, it would be deserved because she (and how the Coen's choose to portray the character....which changed the whole point of view) are what made this movie separate from the John Wayne version.

"True Grit" has a shot at Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay, because Deakins and the Coens always have a shot at getting those.

My problem with the nomination for the girl from True Grit is that because of Hollywood politics, she's up for supporting actress, when she is clearly the lead in the movie. It's sort of an unfair comparison with her and the other actresses, just based on screen time. She is great, though.

I haven't seen it yet - but I've been confused about how they determine which rolls are supporting and which ones are leading before too.

I think credit billing order and the way the SAG determines such things is a factor.

I wonder if a nomination has ever been rejected based on the Academy determining that an actor submitted for nomination in a supporting roll was actually a lead before? I only ever seem to hear about nominations being rejected in the Feature Documentary category, because the Academy members in that peer group are clearly insane. ("Hoop Dreams"? "Crumb"?? "The Thin Blue Line"?????) I really am surprised that "Exit Through The Gift Shop" made it past those weirdos even though there are rumors the entire film is a put-on.

There was the recent stink about the "Buried" screenwriter, who got a slap on the wrist for incorrectly wording the self-promo material he sent out to Academy members or something too.

I think that slap had more to do with what the Academy saw as improper campaigining for an Oscar.

As much as I think the girl dominated True Grit with her performance, I think you can still claim Bridges is the lead character. You might not convince me, but you could make the argument.

Yeah - they were upset about this little "for your consideration" package the screenwriter and his manager sent out - and there's some weird rules like - you can ask for consideration, but you can't specifically ask for a nomination vote.

Like addressing Academy members is like addressing royalty or something - Like some moneybags dude in Hollywood is going to faint from hearing it put so directly. It's crazy. They spend wads and wads of cash campaigning hopefuls for nomination votes. The promotion that goes on is shameless - BUT it better be worded the right way - because spending a fortune parading banners of stars around is all good, but asking for a nomination straight up is vulgar!
