    Canadian Metered Internet Regulations

I hope this doesn't qualify as being politically controversial.

I'm just passing this along and hoping that some of the Canadian members of this board take a moment to read the article and consider signing the online petition.

    Globe and Mail article:
A metered Internet is a regulatory failure - The Globe and Mail

    Online Petition:

Oh yeah, I've already done so. It's terrible that here in Canada, the internet is basically being held back with things like download caps and now metering. We used to be near the top in internet speed, access, etc. but crap like this is going to put us so behind the rest of the world. The CRTC is a joke and is run by old people who are totally out of touch and ignorant as to the potential of the internet these days. They don't have a clue about what they are doing.

      Awesome cjefferys!

I'm not one to normally pass around petitions and get on a political soap-box like this - but the thing that irritates me the most is how little coverage this is getting in the media. There's no chance the general public would be cool about this, if they knew about it.

      Here's a statement from the CRTC's site:

"A retail customer is the end user who purchases access to the Internet. The CRTC does not regulate rates, quality of service issues or business practices of Internet service providers as they relate to retail customers. This is because there is enough competition in the market that retail customers can shop around for service packages."

I don't know anyone who shares their opinion on this.

If Canada is going to be globally competitive technologically and culturally than if anything it should be the CRTC's job to regulate for cheaper access.

This kinda reminds me of the first old days of dialup when they charged for each time you went on the internet as a seperate phone call.

          Pathetic joke.

I'm on the "do not call" list. A duct cleaner calls my wife everyday, she asks him to stop calling and he says "Oh yeah, give me one good reason"

          Thanks CRTC!

            Hmmmm....

It's interesting though.... back in the day I remember a LOT of burgeoning internet nerds going on abou8t how it was the ultimate infreedom, and there was no way to shut it down, regulate it, whatever. I popinted out that SOMEBODY owns all the equipment used for access, and all you'd have to do is target THEM to regulate things. Oh how they laughed....

There has been ongoing talk that they might be enacting similar measures in the U.S. I really hope that doesn't happen.

The best way to get rid of a jerk like this is to sound interested and just put the phone down and allow the person to talk away until they realize that there is no one at the other end. They don't really care about the fast hang up but hate having their time taken.

Personally, I just screen all my calls and never answer a phone I don't recognize. We keep the phones silenced in our bedrooms so if they want to call in the wee hours of the morning or super late at night...go right ahead.
