for straight theme music, no lyrics, i would have to say Dr. Who.....very Pink Floydish
also the original Battlestar Gallactica once you get past Lorn'es narration
for themes with lyrics
Welcome Back Kotter, Greatest American Hero, Highlander (Queen), Tour of Duty(Stones)
Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Hawaii 5-0, Kotter, Rockford Files, Batman, SWAT...I think Miami Vice was the last big one.
Actually I think Friends may have had the last hit theme song, by the Rembrandts.
For sit-coms I'd pick:
Gilligan's Island
Beverly Hillbillies
Welcome Back, Kotter
Hogan's Heroes
Happy Days (season 3 on)
Night Court
For action/drama:
Greatest American Hero
Hawaii 5-0
Dukes of Hazzard
Magnum P.I.
A-Team
McGyver
Bonanza
The Incredible Hulk (although more for the end theme than the beginning)
Rockford Files
Batman 66
Green Hornet
Animation:
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?
The Flintstones
Spider-Man 67
Super Friends (any version, but particularly the All-New and Challenge themes)
Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes TV theme ("Overture, cut the lights...")
The Simpsons
Batman Beyond
I told you there were too many to name! There are a LOT you guys have listed that I didn't mention...or I'd be posting for days!
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes TV theme ("Overture, cut the lights...")
Chris
I just wanted to point taht the lyrics to that theme are "Overture, CURTAIN, Lights. . ."
Anyway. . .
I'm not sure if it counts as a tv theme or not but "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts was used for Freaks and Geeks. The entire soundtrack to that show was as good as. . . well, the show itself.
I wanted add in some that had not been mentioned yet:
