    Guilty pleasure

This is a 'guilty pleasure' of mine. I realize that the MAJORITY here couldnt give a rat's arse LESS about this property, and thats more than fine, but as a young teenager of 13-14 years old, I was beyond interested and TOTALLY hooked! I know more about these characters than most normal adults ever should, but to me the characters represent all that is RIGHT and all that you'd want in a 'fantasy property' - super-powered heroic characters, good writing, (most times..) dire circumstances, horrific villians, and an overall sense of warmth and an underlying positivity. These characters are very well developed by master storyteller Akira Toriyama, and all have a definite soft spot in my heart.

Here is the original intro as I saw it 25+ years ago. A local NY station used to show Spanish language dubs of the show, hence my first exposure:
(This is altered and lengthened, but it was the clearest option as far as audio..)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AgVMm4jPBw

And this is one of my "go to" videos as far as personal motivation and a general sense of positive strength. When they are performing this, I picture the various characters and scenerios that I have grown to love. Hironobu kicks AZZ here, giving it up for the fans as always, and looking more like a man of 25 rather than closer to 50. I always saw Goku as a sort of 'Superman', those same strong morals but with a real sense of childlike amusement and utter foolishness, really great stuff.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNt5FVSSL4U

Opinions are welcome, of course, but dont be TOO harsh on me or judgemental - I love these characters!

Oddly, I dont really care for anime, and find most of it unenjoyable or repellent. This series and it's characters, however, have a real sense of humanity and decency. Althought violent at times and dismissed by many from our generation as obnoxious or 'junk food', (Dont forget, many Marvel and DC characters were persecuted for these same things 40+ years ago..)the basic morality of the heroic characters cant be denied - there are FAR worse things for a young boy to emulate these days! Example: (One of hundreds..) Goku, barely escaping a doomed planet, goes back into the burning fray to rescue a small rodent, saying "I got you little guy"...this from a character that has the power to destroy mountains...and thats what its all about folks.

"No matter what happens, I know it will be alright, I am the light in the darkness!"

    SPARKING!!

      Awesome!

Christopher Sabat (English speaking voice of Vegeta) : "Vegeta has to be the most bitter, single-minded man ever..."

He definitely had 'small man syndrome', but he got over that and came around to the side of right eventually. He is a great character, but far from my favorite....

I know what you are coming from.

I absolutely love seeing Isao Sasaki sing the Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers) theme song...it might be corny to some...but I always get goosebumps seeing him perform this song...it gets me every time...

Thanks guys! WOW - Honestly, I thought for SURE that this post and my sentiments would get BLASTED for being juvenile and 'stupid'!

And Hector, yes sir, Starblazers kicked ten kinds of azz, but wasnt nearly the show that DBZ was in it's prime.

That live video of Hironobu on stage fuels my morning workout!

"Cha-la Head-cha-la no matter WHAT happens I know it will be alright! GENKI DAMA!!"

The BRAVADO that the Spanish speaking singer sings with is PURE awesome...I LOVE the scene that shows Goku destroying Frieza's arm, only to be rebuilt, the wiring and mechanics of it are VERY cool! (One of the BEST sagas...Frieza is a rotten [email protected] hoped for his demise...)

Yes, I AM "nuts", but comparing DBZ to Starblazers is like comparing the Justice League to X-Men 2099....there really ISNT a comparison sir...

In your mind...but not in reality...Space Battleship Yamato is a Japanese institution with a lot more history...several TV serials, epic anime movies...and finally a big budget live action film that was just released in Japan.

DZB is for the little kiddies (albeit mindless fighting)...lightweight cartoon fare....and the live action movie sucked donkey testicles...lol.

But hey...if you love it more...more power to ya...

BTW...remember...you started this little war between us...I had not belittled DBZ until you dissed my Star Blazers...so I'm fighting back now...

The character development and longevity of the DBZ characters will be long remembered way after Starblazers and shows like it have faded from memory...sorry man!
