TV shows that should have left already

ALL...so called "reality shows"!

Dude, make fun of me if you want, but I honestly got hooked on Real Housewives of New Jersey. I go over to my Mom's on Monday nights and have dinner, and she'd have it on--I just got sucked into the weirdness of it.

I also don't mind American Pickers and Man vs Food, if they count as reality shows.

First one I can think of is The Amazing Race. How many times can you go around the world? And it always seems they have the same type of people on this thing.

Amazing Race happens to be my favorite show and I never get tired of it. It's not "the same show every time". All the contestants have different personalities and they go to a lot of different countries. The challenges are rarely repeated either. Plus they change up some of the rules every few seasons. This season's twist was the double U-turn forcing two teams to have to complete an extra challenge.
This season (starts in Feb!!!) is the 2nd chance season where previous teams that didn't win get to try one more time.
I hope to one day be on the show.

As far as shows that have overstayed their welcome:
any CSI, NCIS or Law & Order show (all 158 of them)
House
60 Minutes
Big Brother
American Idol... maybe...most likely since Simon is gone.

I also enjoy the Amazing Race. Mostly watching how people react under the stress of being lost, trying to compete, etc.

The worst show of all time that I wish would go away is "The Bachelor". Every season is the same...only with different people. It wouldn't even be on my radar except that my wife loves it and used to be the good husband and watch it with her but finally became so frustrated with the nonsense that I finally told her that I'd rather get a filling than watch the show so we would just have to spend that time apart. The only humor I even get from it is announcing to my wife "In the most Shocking Rose Ceremony Ever...."

American Idol runs a close second. I really don't enjoy watching the horrible singing auditions and rude remarks. I know some people find it humorous but honestly, I don't enjoy watching someone's dream get smashed at the expense of someone who doesn't realize they can't sing.

The best "reality" show ever is without a doubt No Reservations with my hero and god (next to Superman)...Anthony Bordain...the show rules...and he himself rules even more...

I don't watch mush TV but:

In defense of SNL: when I worked in NYC at an art supply store we would supply many local TV shows with foam board/matte board from 1993-1995. Someone, not an actor, came in from SNL for some boards. My co-worker asked this lady why the show wasn't that funny. She said the network is very controlling and the funniest stuff never gets out to TV. I really think this is the case most of the time. SNL never does anything funny because it's never controversial-ever. The network won't allow them to. Think back on some of the funnier bits going all the way back. There was always something to offend someone. Not so anymore.

In defense of reality shows: I have to give some props to Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch. I think both these shows are eye-openers. You think your job is bad-look at what they do on these shows. Deadliest Catch-I don't see much opportunity for fakeness or acting here. These guys are pretty honest about what they do and the risks they take to make $$$ to support their families.

American Choppers used to be good...but now it's really sad to watch...Sr vs Jr is pathetic...talk about needing counseling...lol.

I'm kinda getting sick and tired of Pawn Stars already...nothing but money grubbing sharks...I'm about to abandon ship on that one.

Still sticking with American Pickers though...that show feels more Americana.

I actually like Pawn Stars....I agree that they are money grubbing sharks but I do feel like I am learning something. If you want to see something pretty horrible, watch Cash and Cari sometime. She has a consignment shop and does estate sales. They have only aired a few episodes and it sucks. Nothing extremely interesting and it seems like she sells items below what they are worth. She doesn't seem to have much knowledge of anything but is constantly praised by her co-horts...c'mon, when she is asking $15 and the buyer wants it at $12.50 and they negotiate to $13.50 or something like that....it's just garage sale nickel and diming. That is it in a nutshell. She does garage sales (disguised as estate sales) and takes 30% as her commission. When she is selling a household full of items and is estimating the sale at $3,000 that isn't exactly much of an estate sale.

I will also disagree on SNL regarding political correctness. If anything, they are competing more and more with cable tv for eyeballs than they were 30 years ago. They don't hold back on political sattire and they definitely do sketches that I think would offend people. The problem is that they just aren't that funny. I like SNL....I have been watching it since the early days. I even tried watching it tonight with Gweneth Paltrow and I stayed with it for about 15 minutes. It just wasn't funny. They have jumped the shark. If the really funny stuff never made it to air...believe me, there would be a dvd release of the sketches that didn't make it to tv. They have to compete with cable so if anything, they should be edgeier than they were back at the beginning. The problem is that there isn't anything unique about what they do. It is the same stuff going on 30+ years. They need to change what they do and think outside the box.
