The shmuck who wrote the announcement for Variety just made a mistake.. Amanda is still human in the new movie.
I wouldn't exactly call Ryder a "big name" anymore, but I don't think her part will be important enuff to make much of a difference anyway. I personally don't care who's in it, as long as it's smartly written and entertaining.
I actually like Winona Ryder.
To me, it was her alone that made Alien-4 watchable.
I think the new movie is going to tank no matter who's in it.
To be honest, I hope it does tank big-time.
As far as i'm concerned, the classic series should not be touched.
If the new movie does become a semi-hit....... To me, it just proves most so-called Trekkies will love ANYBODY in a red, blue and yellow shirt.
Perhaps i'm just old and uncompromising.
But i'm proud of it
Nimoy looked just like Spock in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," and Shatner looked just like Kirk. The movie still sucked. Most of the movies with the original cast weren't worth watching a second time. If the new movie has a good story, I don't care if the actors are different.

Oh God...I have to agree with anthony. I also feel...that the Story will make...or break this Movie. Of course Shat & Nimoy will always be Kirk & Spock to Me...but one other element that made TOS so great...was the Writing!
That's one thing that has to be recognized IMO ---man---a good script is a good script
no matter what legacy is being contorted
