    Target buys Zellers.

Well, they finally did it. Target has bought out the Zellers Department Store chain. While I hate to see a Canadian chain go down, I'm kind of looking forward to the toy department revamp Target will bring.

No big surprise here I guess? Target has been going to build a store in Calgary a couple of times in the last 10 years or so, dropping plans both times. The first because of a US recession, and the second time was in 08' with the worldwide recession.

According to the news, they are going to only rebrand a few stores (as low as 15) at first, and then slowly transition the others over to Targets.

Good bye Zeddy Bear, Good Bye Law of Toyland, and farewell to the Big Z burger and the greasy Zellers restaurants...Last of their kind.

Target's after Christmas Toy clearance is in full swing with markdowns up to 75% off. Just picked up the 9 pack STAR WARS exclusive for $12.48!
Too many toys. Not enough space!

According to one article, Zeller's parent company is currently owned by an American investment company, so I guess they haven't techically been Canadian for awhile anyway (I didnt' know that). To be honest, I won't miss them, the ones near me have been mere shells of what they used to be for years now. Due to Walmarts located nearby, the local Zellers have become kind of shabby, empty, poorly staffed stores. It's been sad watching them slide down, and I've been expecting them to close soon for a while now. So I guess this Target deal will be a good thing.

I'm not surprised, having spent the majority of the 1990s working with them as supplier, this isn't the case of a giant knocking off another Canadian chain. This is an example of a well run company taking over a mismanaged mess of one.

Two of my extended family hold jobs at HO, I hope this doesn't affect them negatively.
